Title: I need help with custom MAME controller config files

Can someone point me to documentation on the new controller config file format?

I used to have custom controller ini files (using 0.79) to enable 6 buttons for player two in street fighter and for custom assignments like the block buttons in the mortal kombat series.

With the new system (using 0.89), I can't seem to get it working correctly. If I create a custom cfg file for mk3, no other games work *except* mk3. I know I'm doing something wrong but I'm not sure exactly what.

I don't want to do the button assignments within each game either. I prefer to use XML configuration files if possible.

I've searched and I can't find anything about the new file format in the FAQ. Can anyone help?
