Title: Super Joy query
Post by: cdbrown on October 08, 2002, 01:53:21 am
Hi all,

I was playing around with the Happs Super joystick that I got the other day just looking at how everything fits together and works before mounting.  I noticed the small part circled below is what makes contact with the microswitch actuators and not that hourglass piece.

Is this right?  When the stick is in place with the hourglass (blue circle) and the clip, if I pull up on the stick that's when the small piece retracts into the base and the hourglass can then hit the actuators.  I thought the hourglass piece was supposed to be used to change between 4 and 8-way by turning it over.  But the way it is now it will ave no effect.

Please set me straight on this.

Cheers

That's not correct.  The "hourglass" is the actuator, and it is the part that pushes the switches.  The other piece (circled in red, let's call it the "plunger") is just to return the joystick to center thru pressure from the main spring.  When the stick is in a neutral position, it LOOKS like the plunger is in contact with the switches, but if you tilt the stick, the actuator pivots up toward the switch.  If it's not working the way i described, you must not have assembled it correctly.

Thanks 1up.

All I did was take the parts out of the plastic bag that it was delivered in from Bob Roberts.  The base with the plunger and spring were already installed as was the microswitches.  I picked up the base and put the parts together like is shown on the diagram and just started to play around with it.  That's when I noticed the plunger acting on the microswitches.  Every now and again when the stick moves to the side the microswitch actuator would get caught under the hourglass actuator.  That's when I though something was wrong.  If I pull up on the stick the plunger moves into the base and it works.

The end of the plunger extends below the microswitches.  I thought things might move slightly once it is mounted.  Something like the joystick being pulled up putting pressure on the internal spring and having the actuator line up with the microswitches.  Maybe the microswitch arms need to be adjusted as they could be too close, though there is a gap when the stick is centred.

Don't know  :-[

I think you should find that once you put the circlip on the bottom of the shaft it will put some upward pressure on the whole thing.  This, combined with the slight upward movement when the joystick is moved from vertical, should mean that the hourglass actuater is what comes into contact with the microswitch.

It's probably not the best design I've seen, but it seems to work.

Two quick things to check.  First, you need to make sure the orientation of all the parts is just like the picture.  You might have installed the cone (above your blue circle in your diagram) upside down.  Second,  once everything is assembled and your ready to install the e-clip, you have to install the clip on a slot that you cannot see without pushing up the actuator.

Lastly, the new Supers cannot be setup as true 4-way joysticks.  The smaller cone toward the top only makes the diagonals less sensitive.
