Title: Star Wars Yoke Panel- FINISHED!
Post by: MameMaster! on December 20, 2004, 02:49:55 pm
Well....those of you that have followed my Star Wars Yoke Saga in the "everything else" forum...you know that I'm THRILLED to be posting this project as finished!

Long story short...I purchased the SW Yoke prehacked via USB/Sidewinder and I needed to come up with a way to interface with my "Mame Invaders" machine.

I've received a lot of flack for my removable XArcade control panel; but as you'll see below there's a method to my madness.....with this new panel, I now have the following removable "modules": SW Yoke; XArcade; Happ trackball and steering wheel (plus I have a Act gun and dedicated Oscar Spinner).

Here are a few pix to show you my little project....ENJOY!

Here's a pic of how I received the panel. It was complete....but I removed the metal plate and had to get the artwork off....too many cigarette burns on the poor art.

I used a little goo gone and some elbow grease to remove the old "Atari" logo art. In the photo you're seeing the new repro art from arcadegraphix.com....excellent!

here's my temporary foam core base that I built to check out my dimensions.....the wood is the final.

I ended up spray painting it black. And, I re-sprayed the plastic panel (that I removed the stickers from) with a semi gloss black spray for plastics....it looks brand new!

....here's the panel (just before I repainted it). I ended up reversing it on my final layout because of all of the cigarette burns on the plastic. By doing that I made the part with the 3 "dimples" ( the real "bottom") the new "top". If you didn't know....it looks like it was meant to be that way!

You can see my bracing on my little box. That yoke weighs just over 10 lbs!....

Here are the parts going together....including a shot from the inside back/top of the yoke (the part that will be against the machine).

The little clear plastic box (near the yoke) is the SideWinder hack. I wanted to protect it since the wire are so fragile.

Here's the finished panel attached to my "module shelf".

I love being able to make this into a dedicated Star Wars at any time!....

I've been able to get it to work really perfectly with Star Wars (of course); Empire Strike Back (of course); Return of the Jedi (of course...but the game SUCKS so bad); Road Blasters; Outrun; Paperboy (works perfectly!...I didn't even think of that one until I tried it out); Stun Runner....and that's about as far as I've gotten so far testing it.

Any others that you guys think would work well with this?

Go out and get one of these....you won't regret it!

Man, that is cool.  I like that style of SW panel.  But just think of all the time that you wasted, I mean for $800 dollars, you could have just bought a refurbished one.

te-he haha

Um.

BTW
If you were ever bored enough, I would like to have the deminsions of that panel the star wars formed piece, along with the depths and such of it.

Looks great :)

I have a yoke waiting for me to restore...busy on my 360 wheel panel atm.  Did you supply the artwork to classicarcadegrafix?  Or do they have it anyway?

Do you know if the overlay is the inkjet ones or on vinyl?

For other games with the yoke, try some 270 driving games like Outrun or spyhunter with the yoke.  Maybe some analog games or shooting games too.

OK...here are some answers for those who asked---

The sticker is on some type of textured vinyl with an adhesive backing. Very sturdy and "professional" feeling.

Regarding the dimension of the plastic "back panel", here you go--

14.5 Wide

11.5 High

The "lip" around the edge is approx. .75 deep and is angled in a bit (toward the panel).

The hole for the yoke in center is approx. 3.75" square (FYI- It's not exactly square, see the photos in my thread for details) and is centered 5.5" in from the left and right and approx. 3 5/16 down from the top.

I hope that helps!

do you find the sidewinder hack to be off center?  i can't for the life of me get my crosshairs in the middle of the screen by default.  According to windows--the yoke is centered perfectly but star wars shows it as otherwise.  Whats been your experience?

Very nice addition!
Do you have to use AnalogMame for pot based analog controls?

...nope, plain old vanilla Mame32.

Son of a B!....thank goodness you said that!...mine is just slightly off center to the left as well. I've assumed that I had to mess with my settings more in mame. I have my X/Y set at 95%. What about you?.....I find that it still works perfectly and doen't effect the game play; but it does bother me it's about .75" to 1" off to the left of center (at least on my set up).

I found the same problem when using my 49-way stick for Star Wars - I'd assumed it was something to do with the effective low resolution of the stick, but that shouldn't matter when in the center really...

In the words of our American brethren: "That is tight"

well done!

I noticed the same "off center" thing on my Dual Strike hacked T2 guns.

I think it's just a MAME thing.  :P

Again, dig the Star Wars panel.

Rig a foot pedal & shifter and it would also work pretty nice for Spy Hunter.

....oh well. It's interesting that, that happens....who knows? Considering that I can play these games at all still amazes me after 2 years!.....

I like the idea of playing Spy Hunter....but don't you also need a weapons van button? (in addition to the smoke, oil, rockets and guns). That of course is also in addition to the gas/brake......hmm...I wonder if I can find a Spy Hunter Panel???

Just make the rockets button double as the van button.  ;D

Spy Hunter is cool. And by cool, I mean totally sweet.

Ironically enough, the Star Wars yoke I bought to rebuild for myself has a Weapons Van button smack in the middle of it.  I have to get rid of that button.

WTF??

I never saw a weapons van in Star Wars!

Hmmm... maybe it was a Empire Strikes Back thing...

(pictures a Snowspeeder pulling into a big red van)

Awwwwwwwwwwwww jeah.  ;D

Yeah, it's even still attached to a Spy Hunter panel.

Probably was a more cost effective replacement part back in the day.

Post by: MameMaster! on December 21, 2004, 02:52:52 pm
....are you sure you want to remove it?....can you just re label it "warp" or something to keep the star wars theme but still be able to play Spy Hunter?

It's going into a VectorMAME cab.  There will be no Spy Hunter.

Man, that's cool.

You didn't even say anything about the cab!  That's a great Bezel and I like the sideart.  Were you the one that made that in the Arcade Art Library?

I made my cab out of a Stargate Cab too. But I see that you put on a Midway door.  Nice touch.
The side art knocks me out as much or more than your engineering on that yoke.

I have an old roadblaster's cab that has a control on it like that.  I may just have to build me one of those!

All you guys are really teeing me off. Now I actually have to make a nice one.

It's awe-inspiring!

Here's the kinda yoke I'm talking about, isn't really really similar to yours?

That's not a yoke, just a ~270deg steering wheel (with triggers IIRC) - I have a broken one of those somewhere...

Roadblasters has a unique yoke. It is a 270 yoke, but it has an encoder wheel and not a pot.

You say you have a roadblasters cab? I have a System One motherboard with Roadblasters cartridge if you are interested?
