Title: Dos question

I am installing some older dos software in a pure dos 7.1 eviroment, but the booklet i have for this software  (its quite old) states that dos will only allow a maximum of 116 files to be placed in the root directory. and that exceeding this number will result in data loss and unpredictable behavior..
i have never heard this before and im wondering if this is true.

Older DOS had this, IIRC, but newer doesn't.

It's always a good idea to put stuff in to directories off the root anyway, IMNSHO.

It is true. There was definitely a limit to how many files could be put in the root directory but I can't remember how big the limit was.

I think it was actually due to the way the FAT16 file system works rather than DOS itself. I'm half guessing here, but I think that FAT32 has a much bigger limit.

I'm sure a google search would provide the answer.

i had never heard of it..
assuredly i have no plans of placing hundreds of errant files in my root, but i wasntr sure if this was indeed a dos limitation or one imposed by the software im using..
