I can't jump on the phone and tell my mates because they really wouldn't care, it's also likely they would throw empty beer bottles at me the next time our paths crossed if I did specially call them to discuss this. (You guys don't know where I live so the bottles won't hurt as much.)
But hey, I just got 223,950 on Gyrus, level 21!! Personal best! 8)
I am sure somebody will step in now and tell me they can do 400,000 and still have 4 ships left..... Until this happens I am gunna feel like a big man if only for a little while. ;D
I had to tell someone, been playing Gyrus a long time you know.....
-
I'm sure there's plenty better players at Gyruss out there, but just let you know my best is 249,100, not sure what level and my wife's best is 208,700. Gyruss was one of just a few games at home I didn't own the high score of until recently, my wife owns positions 2 through to 5 on the top score list.
-
I played Time Pilot for about an hour once before I realized the board was set to 255 lives.
-
Hey, I have a question! Does the game do anything special when you make it back to Earth? I love Gyruss, but it's one of those games I just can't breakthrough and become great at.
-
I'm still waiting to find out if there is any end to Ganulet...
-
RE: Gauntlet
I'll let ya know.

Well I have fallen from my high tree BIG time. :) Must beat RetroBorg!!
Wow, My personal best is just under 100,000.
-
Just tried the game on MAME (no controls, just keyboard). Got 24,250, woohoo!
-
Gyruss just goes back to the beginning after Earth waves, except now there are 3 warps to Neptune instead of 2, and the fast that kicked in previously is here to stay!
(Yes this is the game that started my downhill slide into nerd-dom :P)
-
I never really played much Gyruss... it always struck me as a poor mans Tempest.
-
No a common misconception Gyruss was always 8 way stick, never spinner.
-
40100 is all i could get.. tho the gf is in bed and me beating on the machine wouldnt of been smart..
damn fun game tho.. wish id of known about this one before.. :o

I hope you do beat my score, that will give me incentive to start playing it again, my wife spat the dummy when I got that score, especially since it was like the first time I cracked 200,000. If you beat this score please post it on this thread.
From memory I made it back to earth and as you said after level 20 the speed is insane and you just have to use the force.

Ahh Gyruss, my all time favourite. Which isn't to say I'm that great at it. I've never taken notice of my scores but I have gotten to 1 warp to Earth, never quite made it all the way. I've made it to Mars on one ship but loose all the rest on the warps to Earth, very annoying.
I've got 3 Gyruss PCB's and still don't have a vertical cab built for one to go in yet.
-
i finally added the highscore thing to my mame.. so i figured LETS TRY GYRUSS again and get a quicky 10k score and see if it sticks..
sure enough, 74k..
this games so awsome..
-
cool, a score i can actually aim for! im on 195,000. might go play some now. it's fantastic that it uses an 8 way too. i remember it in the arcades but thought id lose too much money learning it. looked scary! so the first time i played it was at a friends on mame using a keyboard. not very good with a keyboard somehow...
edit: memory is failing. im on 195000 on GALAGA. was 154000 on gyruss, just brought it up to 176000
-
on my "MAME Machine", the wife's got me beat on Gyruss...
she's at 197,550...
-
as i played gyruss, my sister put on U2. 'new years day' , which came out in 1983, like gyruss. how cool is that :)
-
Well this thread led me to try Gyruss too. I don't think I ever played it before, or if I did, I don't remember it.
Anyway, my first game was 47,600.... I got a long way to go to compete with you guys heh, but the game sure is fun. I'll have to get it running on some real arcade controls ASAP, I just tried it on my laptop... not exactly ideal.

I found this game doesn't ramp up the difficulty real smoothly. I cruise through to about 120,000 points every time, then at the arrival of one of the planets (Neptune?), it goes to psycho speed and I'm struggling to stay alive.

my wife spat the dummy when I got that score,
"Spat the Dummy" !!??!! I dunno what that means, but I know it's making me laugh!
Gyruss rules. Real Gyruss, that is- I was way dissapointed the one on the Konami TV game units was copied from Nintendo instead of the arcade. That version drinks chowder.
-
If I remember, the joystick in Gyruss wouldn't let you "center" the stick.
-
That is a false memory. Gyruss had a standard Monroe leaf switch joystick. It was a nice smooth heavy duty stick. Built better than a Wico, but Wico's age better. I THINK I have one or two of them laying around somewhere.
I still need a Gyruss board, I have most of the other good Konami Classic boards.
-
I've just finished my cab and at last got to actually sit down and play the thing. I haven't played Gyruss for years. I got 370,000 + I can't remember the exact score I'm at work. I'll snap a shot from my cab tonight and post it.
The Earth challenge stage is really easy compared to the previous 2.
When it wraps round you have 3 warps to get through intially. But at the start of the 2 warp the music restarts as if you have just started the game.
I've got bigger scores than this, when I used to play it for real.
-
Here's the pick from my cab.
It's not a mock up. It was the first game I played after I set all my software up. No cheats involved.
-
No way man.
That is so wrong.
I choose to believe that's a cut & paste.
-
no god, why?
-
Nice score Hurray Banana, I'm surpirised more people here hadn't popped up with scores like that, I guess there's just one thing to do now and that's fire up the machine and select Gyruss.
-
It's not a cut and paste. I'm actually quite good at gyruss, I used to play against people in my local arcade for money (back in '84/85) on some machines. Gyruss was one of em, Gorf was another.
It's strange some games just seem to be ingrained in your brain. Your reflexes seem to operate quicker than you actually see stuff. It only happens on certain games. I had a similar skill with PowerDrift, my favourite racer of all time.
I used to play that at uni. I could get 5 golds plus the extra gold for the weird additional tracks, where you flew the afterburner 2 plane after completing stages A, C or E and the SUper Hang On bike when you completed B and D. I could even do this after having a few beers.
I can't play all games, never got used to Defender but always wished I could play that :(

You may have a high Midi-Chlorian count.
-
Don't know what that is.
Maybe I just spent too much cash learning some machines.
I once spent
-
i got 8970987 points last night, then i woke up with my head in my breakfast :D. great scores guys theres no wasy i could match that, i can beat outzone with one credit though (in the arcade, and on my cab natch).
-

I assume the speed stays fast though? Had a couple of games last night for the first time in a few months, only got as far as 2 warps to Mars. Will have to try harder tonight.
-

"I'm the only human than can do it"
Perhaps Hurray Bananna is the first on our planet to use the force... It's kinda wasteful to just use it on Gyruss though :P
-
Did ya happen to see that Twin Galaxies is offering a bounty for the high score on GYRUSS this year (MAME is allowed)?
"Bounty (6)
-
2.5 Million shite!
that would be about 2/3 hours solid. Id' be knackered
-
I am still coming to grips with these scores. My average game is around 170,000 and at times I have gotten more, but these times are rare.
I have played Gyrus a lot (arcades in the 80's and MAME), and I thought I was OK. These other high scores are just disturbing me. I could play for another 20 years and wouldn't be able to get 400,000, I am sure of this.
At least I still beat danny_galaga. ;D
-
Broken Bones!
Do you want to nominate a game, for us all to have a go at, and then post some scores.
-
Just to shame all of us.
Here are the current arcade version records for Gyruss, straight from the Twin Galaxies.
I am in awe :o
-
Check out the MAME high score though. It's only 225900 and that's pretty achievable.

Broken Bones!

So what you are asking is;
"Hey BB, do you suck at any other games that we can disgrace you at?"
Well to answer- I am not real good at it, but I have really got hooked on Gigawing recently. I also have a soft spot for Bomb Jack and Exerion.
I would challenge most at Parsec from the old TI99/4A, but this console & game would go over most peoples heads.
-
BB man I didn't mean it in that way.
I like Bombjack, I used to play it a lot on the old Amstrad 6128. Never played the arcade one much, as for Giga Wing never played it I'll have to take a look at it.
-
I saw the Mame score and was about to post but they need video footage for confirmation. I don't know whether they would accept a mame video tho'
-
has to be on videro cassete by a camcorder showing the startup (to show no cheats) :)
-
BB man I didn't mean it in that way.
No I was only joking around. Just consider it sarcastic Aussie humor.
-
No I did get the sarcasm, I'm quite a sarky bstd meself, but I'm trying to limit it so I don't piss everyone off on this board before ;D
-
Ok guys...
I think my wife's addicted.. lol...
She's been playing the game like a madwoman and is now at 220,200!!
I can just imagine it now... "Hello, my name is Daniel and my wife's a Gyruss Junkie".....
-

Well if she's at 220k, and the MAME record is just under 226k, I think it's time to start recording her games lol.
Then you can alter your statement to "Hello, my name is Danielw and my wife's the Gyruss MAME champion"
-

WooHoo.....! This actually means that I hold the world record for MAME Gyruss. Now I can forget about competing with stupid scores like 2.5 million.
My Grandmas was right, I am very special.
-
BB You've forgotten my 370,850 ;D
-
BB You've forgotten my 370,850 ;D
It's like once again I climb the high mountain, take a deep breath and look out at the wondrous view before me. Then in 2 seconds some bastrardio from behind pushes me off.
I now declare Gyrus sucks and is totally uncool.
-
Ahem...
How's this then Hurray Banana?
-
That's pretty funny ;D
-
Ok.... now, just in case you guys don't believe me, I've added a pic to my webpage that shows my wife's progress...
(Yep, she's done it again.. 355,200 at Stage 34)
Check it out: Http://www.geocities.com/daniel_270/Arcade.html (towards the bottom)
-
That is mad.
I thought there was something in the female genome that resulted in them being extremely poor at computer games...... Are you sure you
-
That's a pretty amazing score.
She only needs to go another couple of levels to beat me, I better start playing but I'm getting re-hooked on track and field ;D
