Title: Joystick/wiring/encoder problem?
Post by: atark on December 19, 2004, 05:22:16 pm
Got a strange one here.  Over the last year I've been picking up pieces to my cabinet and have started putting it together.  Right now I'm working on a stand alone single player controller as a test to get the kinks worked out.

Using a happs joystick/buttons and keywiz.  I have everything wired up.  Checked it several times.  up/down and diagonals work fine.  left and right don't work at all.  Any ideas?  I'm stumped especially since the diagonals ARE working.

I've tried both 8-way and 4-way games.  4-way I can only get left/right movement from the diagonals.  8-way games I can't get left/right movement at all just up/down and diagonals.

Sounds like you've miswired it.  One scenario that would cause this is if you connected the left/right grounds to the NO terminals of the up/down switches.  Make sure the left/right COMMON terminals are connected to ground.

Now this is getting frustrating.  The only thing that looks like it may have been wrong is left and right possible reversed. When pushing right should the microswitch being activated be wired to P1 RIGHT and when pushing left should the microswitch being activated be connected P1 LEFT? The only reason for asking is after swapping LEFT/RIGHT wires now diagonals go in the opposite expected direction.

Other than that all wiring looks correct.  All commons are connected to ground.   Could it be a problem with the encoder?

Atark,

Drop me an email at techsupport@groovygamegear.com and I'll see if I can walk you through fixing your problem.

It sounds like wiring issues of some nature.  Board problems are more along the line of non-functional boards/inputs, and we don't let those past the QC department (me :) )

Thanks,
