Title: Question on steering wheels in MAME
Post by: botez on October 03, 2002, 12:24:34 pm
I just got two Off Road steering wheels for my cabinet and I am wondering how I should hook them up.

First, I have an optipac, so I could hook them up to that, but I also have Windows XP.  It's unclear to me if I can have both wheels hooked up to the optipac while using XP and still have both wheels function correctly.

My other idea was to use 1-UP's dual strike hack for each wheel so that they would be USB connected.  Would this work so that both wheels could be used at once?

Let me know of any other ideas I should look into for this.  Thanks for the help.

The dual strike won't work for off road wheels, since theywhere optical, not pot controlled.

You can still use the axis splitting in analog mame in XP so each wheel could be an axis of a single mouse.

It's YOU (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=718707797&ssPageName=ADME:B:ON:US:1) isn't it?  =) for want of a few more dollars... I knew I shoulda stayed up for the auctions conclusion.

Back on topic: I'm pretty sure if you use the optipac with windows XP and use Analog MAME you can split the axis so it seems like just one trackball.    does that make sense? (one wheel would go "left to right" on the interface.. and the other "up and down" and analog mame would be able to assign those to left and right for player 1 and player 2 movement... you might even be able to do the same thing with regular mame (i'm not sure)... but that 's the basid idea...

good luck (except on ebay =P )

I think I'm right in saying that if you hook them up to an Opti-pac, using XP, you will not be able to use them simultaneously (for 2 players anyway).

I'm guessing they're 360degree spinner type wheels since you suggested using the Opti-pac, in which case I don't think you can connect them to a dual strike, as these rely on using Pots (not optics).  270degree wheels often use pots tho.

If the wheels you have ARE 360 degree ones, then I'm not sure that it's even possible to use both of these under XP for 2 player games.  Maybe u_rebel can confirm/deny this?

Yeah, it's me  ;) I wanted that yoke pretty bad.  I had it maxed bid at 75 bucks.  Now that I know who I was bidding against, I kind of feel bad for sniping it.  Kind of ;)

I should point out that these are actually 2 Indy Heat steering wheels, not Off Road, as if it makes a difference.   I didn't think about the fact that the dual strike only works for pot based, and that these are optics based.

Thanks for the help, everyone.

You can if you hook one wheel to the X-axis of port 1 of the opti-pac and one wheel to the Y-axis of port 1 of the opti-pac and use MAME Analog + to assign the controls

It would in Win '98, but not under XP, actually, scratch that, dual strike is for pot-based controls and won't work for optical controls like a steering wheel.

offtopic... but.
It's allright... if you had it set to 75 bucks I couldn't have hung... but if you had it set for 34 or 36 or something low that'd been interseting...   You wanted it more.  I just want a bargain (and a Sw style yoke)  But congrats you got a good deal on a seemingly great shape yoke, man... enjoy.

We need to watch for each others' ID's so we don't step on each other too badly... there should be enough yokes and wheels out there for all of us... :)

Unfortunately people don;t use the same IDs here as on ebay.
I;m bidding on an Atari Pole Position wheel and shifter right now.  Hopefully no one here is interested in bidding on it too:)

I think it's all about patience, wasting time, luck, and knowing how much you are willing to pay for something.

A SW yoke might be worth 100 dollars, but if no one bids on it because it's poorly worded /mispelled...  maybe I can get one for 20 or 30 dollars on some magically night. =)

I guess if you aren't willing to pay any price for something, you just need to be patient...

luckily I'm a tightwad and will just wait until that fateful dayI can get a reasonably priced yoke...   Of course I've been hoping forever to find a tag sale where some one is selling some old junk guitar for 20 dollars that is a Les Paul... or these poeople that find classic cabs in decent shape out on the side of the road for garbage pickup and they replace a fuse and get a fully working tempest or asteroids or something...

bah.. i'll find something cheap/cool one of these days...

This is why we need to find a way we can mass-produce a MAME-ready yoke for under $40....

I'll be selling some mame yoke for less then $40....

but it will consist of PVC, tupperware box, and some TP rolls for the handles :)

I was going to bid on the yoke myself... and fell asleep... then was pissed I didn't stay up...

but I was going to max at 50... so it was always yours... but I saved you a few bucks being lazy :)
