Cool, I've never seen XP on such an old PC...I've got an old 333 kicking around - might try it on there one day for a laugh :)

While hard to read, your post seems to be informative :-\
You installed from CD and proceeded to turn off everything, if I understood the chicken scratch. What exactly did you leave ON there, what other information can you give us about your setup? Are you using it in a cab or using the keyboard for controls for now?
-
You could try something like XPLite.
You just have to disable the services you don't need (networking, etc.) otherwise via Administrative tools and also turn off all the visual options.
Windows may not look as nice but you do get a good boost in speed in my experience

Xp lite is crap, user beware!
Doing it manually via blackviper's tutorials should be ok though.
Yeah xp will run on any x86 computer, assuming you bypass the checks it uses to see if the pc is beefy enough. You'd be suprised how well it runs on lesser systems too, it's just the bootup that seems to take forever.

Maybe he was cursing a lot and the autocensor is to blame for the unintelligible post. Damn autosensor :)

Hes from Michigan... It might be the water ;D
Howard, have you used XPLite? I heard it was pretty good, but it removed directX by default (or a setting). Is that the only problem?
I would LOVE to see someone with a cab friendly XP settings...
Assuming mame, a few frontends out there... and a network connection only.
last time I tried to super/optimize XP it didn't boot... and I had to start over... sigh :-[

Don't dis our water, Lilwolf from Ohio. >:(
Atleast our rivers don't catch on fire. :P
;D

;D
btw, grew up in Ann Arbor...
and I have not claimed Ohio as my state yet...
I openly wish I could afford to move back to Michigan... sigh...

Hey lilwolf, I'm bettin' Ohio is wishing the same thing ;)
Anyone ever try this for their cab, or has Howard scared you all from trying it and I'll have to be your eventual guinea pig?
Either someone's tried it and it sucked so bad they're embarrassed to post here and have Howard tell them he was right (and finally end these "Lite" discussions once and for all) or they're askeered to give it a go due to the boogeymen getting ready to infest their computer with random problems.
Either way, post 'em if ya got 'em....or something

UPDATE: Just tried XP lite on my MAME box
I have 64 of 149 components installed.
Windows starts in exactly 17 seconds and I'm seing quite a significant boost in overall speed.

yepyep.
Now all that's left is finishing disabling services and turning the display settings down and Windows will be really flying! =D

it's impractical due to what it removes that you'll probably want to reinstall and and a lack of what it does for you.
Further details are available if you really really want them.
I used to use 98Lite and agree with the above comments.
It took a lot out, but then a lot of that had to be put back in, so what was the point. It helped a little, and when I was using a Pentium 200 MMX, a little help went a long way, but on modern hardware (read a Duron 650 or better) I wouldn't bother.
OTOH, I didn't see the massive problems with it that HC tends to accuse it off.
Also, be a little careful with BlackVipers stuff too. I ran that and then tried to install a Canon printer. Was on the phone with Canon's Tech support when I realize one of the Services that I disabled on BV's recommendation was why the printer wouldn't install.

*edit*
crap... the forum ate my post
lilwolf, long story short, i have and while it's not as "dangerous" as the other lite programs, it's impractical due to what it removes that you'll probably want to reinstall and and a lack of what it does for you. Turning off services is basically the extent of what it does to speed up xp and it does a strangely conservative job of it at that. Black viper's tweaks will give you a better result, quicker, and for free no less.
Further details are available if you really really want them.
I had already disabled most of the services on the machine im using for my cab but I already had XP Lite so I tried it on this one and it does help
