Title: Megacade becomes Ultracade, but without sucking!!!
Post by: paigeoliver on December 10, 2004, 02:49:33 pm
Ok, I have been piecing together this cabinet here and there, trying to see if I can get one of those Hyper Super Ultra Deluxe cabinets done on a shoestring budget.

Everything here is basically new, except the Wico 4-way joystick, and the pinball coin door.

I used Happ perfect 360 joysticks with NOS Wico Robotron handles.

The coin door was $3 on ebay and I need to cut the hole slightly wider before I install it.

Rear view showing the infamous Wells Gardner d9200 monitor, the back door (on hinges), the monitor cooling fan, power button, and the volume knob.

PC is using an arcadeVGA card as well.

Marquee area.

The controls used are

2x HAPP p360 joysticks with NOS robotron handles
1x Wico 4-way joystick (leaf, used)
1x Happ universal joystick in 4-way mode, angle mounted for Q*Bert
1x Oscar vortex spinner
23x Red microswitch buttons
2x NOS red translucent leaf buttons
1x Imperial 3" PS trackball with groovygamegear upgrade kit installed.

Other parts used include
1x arcadeVGA card (9200 model)
1x Keywhiz max
1x nuovo games pinball coin door

I still need a bezel and glass, but otherwise I have everything.

Right now the total cost is just a hair under $600, counting everything except the PC (but counting the arcadeVGA card). Looks like it will clock in at under $700 total when finished.

My electric bill is usually $22.

You didn't think I actually left all those running all the time, did you?  :police:

Paint that thing black! No sense messing around with a furniture cab since you obviously already have the old lady trained!  ;D

PS: Love that Stunt Cycle! First arcade game I ever played.

One of my friends suggested painting it black, but I'm not doing that. It wouldn't look as good anymore.

I would have chosen a different color stain had I been staining it myself, but it is already stained and I certainly am not going to strip it and start over.

I guess you love those stained cabs or you don't.
To me, a stained cab is like a Pink Ferrari. It's still a Ferrari, but something ain't right! ;D

He can have that setup precisely because he DOESN'T have an old lady, a young lady, or a lady, period, although he seems to have a few pieces of eye candy he likes.

And I'm with Hulkster on htis - you're just showing off, AND now you're bragging that you bought a new camera  ;)

Paige, seriously, you should just title all your threads "hey, come drool over my collection of cabs all you slack jawed yokels will never have in your house if your wife has anything to say about it".

While cumbersome, we'd know beforehand to turn down the envy-o-meter a bit before we check out the thread.

And nice cab.  Good looking work.  Do you happen to remember what grade plywood you used?

I have no clue what grade of plywood it is, BDSjake built the cab, or someone built it for him, not sure. I bought the empty cabinet with monitor from him because it looked better than my TMNT cab ever could.

Its oak plywood from Lowes.

And here it is all finished. I opted not to put glass over the monitor area, it looks fine without any.

I take back that old "paint it black" comment. It came out real nice!

Send an E-Mail to David Foley with a picture of it and tell him it's running on MAME. ;D

Even better, make it sound like you're an enthusiastic Ultracade fan (do those even exist?), and be like "Dear David Foley: Ultracade is so cool! I love your machines so much, that I decided to build my own using a custome made cabinet and a PC running the MAME Software, and an Ultracade marquee I found on eBay. Thank you for your inspiration!" ;D

Send him an email saying you purchased one of his products through a winning bid on ebay, and you are looking for technical support on the MAME emulator that it runs...

 :)

Paige, it looks like your CP is about 30" wide.  Is that right?

Amazing collection, awesome cabinet ... and just dig that ultracade marquee.  It's as if you planned it that way.  Also, I'm shocked by the other marquee pictured earlier.  I mean, somehow I got the impression that you aren't into fighters.  Is the fighter setup for guests or is my impression mistaken?

Cheers,
KenToad

I'm not really into fighters very much. The other marquee was someone else's surplus.

31" Wide actually, but the same layout would fit on a 30" panel as there is a lot of extra space around the trackball.
