Title: Scanning sideart
Post by: ChadTower on December 09, 2004, 09:16:41 am
Okay... I've been asked to scan the sideart on my Asteroids Deluxe so it can be vectorized and reproduced.

Question 1:  How does one go about scanning the side of a 400lb vertical object?

You'd pretty much lay the cab on it's side, and take a flatbed scanner, turn it upside down.  Scan corner to corner, one row at a time.

I was afraid that would be the answer.  That probably won't happen very soon.

A lot of guys beg borrow or steal a very high-megapixel camera and take Overhead shots. One big one for reference, and then detail shots. From that, you can put a good image together.

this involve a lot of work in order to reconstitute the full puzzle.
on of the most common problem with this approach is the paralaxe problem. most photos are taken with a small angle regarding the subject, it's quite impossible to have a perfect perpendicular shot when you try to have overlaping shots.
generally the various closeup are slightly "angled". thus the reconstition loose accuracy.
but i aggre it's better than nothing.

eg I have some hi-res pics of a sideinvader sideart, that are angled. I must admit that reconstituting the whole image is over my skills.  if someone is volunter spaceinvaderssideart_Folder.zip (http://edeveaud.free.fr/tmp/spaceinvaderssideart_Folder.zip)

scanninng huge pieces, as the whole sideart of a cab, is a difficult job that inolves a lot of energy and time:
tracing a grid on the artwork (usefull for the puzzle assembly), overlaping scanning. but we need people doing that.
in order to provide good source material for tracing.

At some point I'm going to have to take the monitor out anyway, since I don't even know if it works yet.

I'll see what I can do with this too, I've been looking for something to stitch so I can make a little photo-tutorial on how to stitch together a side art pic, since this sort of thing seems to give a lot of folk trouble.

I bought a HP 4600 scanner see-thru scanner - i see from HP theyre $79.99 now.

The quality of scan is poor to be honest - i have problems with glass scanning (refractions), get allot of banding in teh image (have to descreen everything).

*but* with adobe photoshop elements 2 I stitch the scans back together (it comes with its one stitching software) - using some careful tools to make sure the scans are 100% square (rotations ina rt packages suck), i put the cab on its side, then scan with plenty of overhang.

I'd love to know if whats os much better between the 4600 and the 4670 (which is $100 more!)

Whilst I moan abotu the image - the scanner can be used in any positon (many a upside-down scanner fails) and if your vectoring it then trully the banding isnt a issue

As for ast dx sideart, I know a guy ihere in the UK who has already produced replacement artwork - altho from a bitmap - the results are stunning tho... Want his details?

Regards, Rav

There's a stitched version of this in the 'just needs tracing' bit of the art library now.
