Hey y'all,
I'm good with making computers, having made about 5 for myself, and was just wondering if there was any intrest out there for MAME computers. I could build pretty much anything, but i could put the following configuration together for about $400. This would be brand new with all new parts and would be ready to play MAME games plus regular PC games. Just checking for intrest.
2.26 GHz Intel Celeron D processor, based on the newer pentium 4 core
Compatible motherboard with all regular connections plus 2 serial ports (trackball or spinner) and a game port (joystick)
256MB Mushkin Memory (good brand)
40GB Seagate 7200RPM hard drive
ABIT ATI Radeon 9200SE Video Card (same chipset as ArcadeVGA) w/ drivers configured to work w/ Arcade Monitor and perhaps an interface for an arcade monitor
Windows XP Home Service Pack 2 w/ all recent updates
MAME and frontend of choice installed and configured
I can also make it so that the pc can power on from a regular arcade button (i can output NO and COM cords for you to connect a regular arcade button anywhere on your cabinet to)
Please respond back if there's any intrest, comments, or criticisms. I would be doing this pretty much at cost but just wanna give something back to the hobby.
Thanks,
John

don't run xp... it alone will cost you too much unless you steal it and it's not that great for cabs...
run win98se
other than that, looks fine to me

For a computer that speed there is NO reason NOT to use XP.... not that great for cabs? what? For any newer computer, you SHOULD run xp. 98se would be a good bet for older systems, but there is no reason not to run XP on a machine like this.

XP rules for cabs with a fairly quick CPU and decent RAM. Fast, stable etc. Can't think of anything better myself.

Agreed.
With a machine of this speed, go XP all the way.
It boots fast and will whup 98 into next week for reliability....

Windows 2000 is much better than XP IMO. Basically the same under the hood, but not as much cutesy stuff and handholding. I really can't see any reason to use XP over 2000 unless you really like the eyecandy and can't set up a shell replacement (like LiteStep), or are just computer illiterate to begin with.
I got a computer for free with XP installed that I was going to use in my cabinet, but got tired of it , so I wiped it and installed Win2000 and I like it much much better. I like OSes that assume that you're not a complete retard (no offense to anyone who prefers XP). I can understand if you use XP for a normal computer, but I just don't see the need for a fancier and more patronizing interface for a MAME machine.

You can easily get rid of the "eye candy" in XP. I'm not debating on whether 2000 is a good OS or not, since I like it as well, but your points are very trivial. You can customize XP to your liking and get rid of the "idiot" side of XP with very little trouble.
