local guy has one for sale, and i Love the setup on it. I really want to mame it, but its a fully restored Joust cocktail.
*Sigh*
-
IMHO. Yes. I'm sure you could find a junker cabinet instead.
Joust was one of my favs growing up...
Still play head to head with my bro...
-
It would be a sin.
-
I would say so, unless you did it in such a way that the cabinet could be put back to 100% original when you're tired of it... No extra holes in the cabinet or control panels, computer components plugged into the existing wiring "J-Pac style" (you'd have to make basically a Williams pinout J-Pac style setup).
Alternately, you could buy the uber-nice Joust cabinet, take detailed measurements off of it and make a copy.
Or you could buy it, and just enjoy having a really nice Joust cocktail. MAME cabs are neat, but not everything has to be a MAME cab... This one's the way I'd go.
-
If it were the completely unrecognizable one I saw awhile back on ebay, completely covered in grime in some guy's shop, I'd say "go for it".
NOT on a functional, restored one though.
Let someone else, who really WANTS a Joust cocktail, have it.

That's the most important part to me. I don't even particularly like Joust, at least not enough to have a dedicated machine, but I know there are tons of people who do. If I were you, I'd keep it a Joust, or perhaps make a duplicate like was mentioned and sell the cocktail once your reproduction is done.
-
yeah, i'll leave to someone else to buy it.
on a side note, does anyone have the measurments for this cab
i like the look

If you can get this for a good deal, why don't you get it? You can set it up as a dual system with swappable control panels. Can't you use one of those multi jamma cards? Or something similiar? Put the original CP in and boot to joust, then when you want your mame stuff, switch to your mame panel, and boot to mame.
That way you preserve a great cab, and have the mame cab you want as well......

I agree with the others, bad idea. If you're going to have swappable panels, MAME, multi-jamma or whatever then what's the point buying a fully restored and working machine? It would be a crying shame...
-
If you can get it cheap then do, then sell it.
They buy what you want for a mame cocktail.
one sold on the 5th for 799 on fleabay.

I thought oscar was working on measurements for this--may want to drop him a line and see

There's a special Hell for people who gut functional classic Williams machines for MAME. ;)
Please don't, I won't sleep well until I know you've spared this machine. I'd kill for a Joust cocktail. That's probably one of my favorite three or four games of all time.

Oh man, oh man, oh man! It's way too far away from me, and being that it's xmas time it will probably go for more than I can afford, but good gawd I'd love to own that.

Christ that IS pretty. Don't MAME that. I'd love to have that sucker working and original.
-
One appendix in Project Arcade sums up maming classics quite well.
My angle on it. If it is a non working cabinet (IE no PCB, bad PCB) and artwork is screwed up beyond repair then go for it. Also it depends on what you want to do. If you can get away with just the controls that are already on it just get a jpac and arcadevga. You cna then swap between the original pcb and a computer :) That's what I plan on doing with my double dragon II.
-
That would apply nicely if it were a JAMMA cab.
-
told you guys it was nice
-
Hoagie,
I too love the joust cocktail setup. I looked for about 6 months before finding one that had been converted to a jamma cabinet, relaminated, and converted to hell. Now I won't feel so bad whatever I decide to do to it.
FYI, in my search I found a converted Joust Cocktail in Maryland and Florida in case any one is interested. I little too far for me but maybe just right for others.

Todd

<tongue in cheek>
If you paid for it, then it would be yours. If somebody else wanted it, they could buy it too.
Once it is yours, what you do with it in the privacy of your own home is your business.
There are those that don't want to buy it, but DO want to tell you what to do with it if YOU buy it.
Screw them.
Honestly, even when I make a cab from scratch, I make it a point to buy a restored unit and jig-saw gut it for no reason and dump it in the ditch.
In fact, I purchased a fully working Gondomania, and melted the marquee in the microwave, just to have the image you see in my sig file! Then I torched the rest of the machine, and peed on the ashes.
I mean, I paid for it, so what the hell, right?
Look, Paul McCartney SHOULD have purchased the rights to the Beatles music. He didn't. Whacko Jacko did. Do I agree with that? What does it matter if I agree? We live in a free market. If there were so many people that wanted that Joust cab in its original form, it wouldn't still be for sale.
</tongue in cheek>
LOL If that was the answer you wanted, I can only offer it in jest.
-
Hoagie, You're acting as if you could get this cab cheap. Well, you won't. First of all, it's a high-demand cocktail table. Secondly, look at the BUY IT NOW price. ($999). Second, there's a reserve. What makes you think you'd get this at a bargain price???
Keep looking...
-
Holy Crap! That's a nice one! I can't believe you actually considered buying it to MAME it! You should be ashamed of yourself. >:(
Build one just like it instead. I seem to recall someone did just that a while back and posted in the Project Announcements forum...

There are about 4 or 5 different black and white cocktails that are VERY similar. Much better choices since largely black and white games tend to be DEAD, missing the board, and otherwise in mint condition.
I passed on one of those suckers at $350 last auction. They are big old space hogs.
-
...They are big old space hogs.
Maybe so, but IMO they are hands down the best looking cocktail cab ever.

Wow... maybt not a sin, but a waste for sure. :-\

Agreed. Besides the fact that it would be difficult to play dual joystick games or install a trackball, I believe this style offers the best cocktail option for MAMErs who like to play horizontal games. I love being able to shove it right up against the wall like an upright and not have to find the room on either side for chairs (midway cocktails, etc). This is all my opinion of course but it was worth a little extra time and money to find one.
