Once again, Oscar proves that he's the MAN!  Although, in my opinion you can't beat the Tempest replica knob.  Oscar, you should start manufacturing these!!  Fultra has pulled out of the business...

You release the pics now, only a few minutes after my Model 2 spinners arrived on my desk.  Oh that's cruel.

Pics look great and my spinners look great too ;D. Thanks Oscar.

silly request.. how about a picture of the bottom... =)   ?

I don' have an oscar spinner (sorry) and was thinking of replacing the weak knob on the wingman warrior parts that I'm using... and would want to see how the shaft hole looks (that sounds odd doesn't it?)

thanks!

I realise this is a little off topic, but I'm wondering whether there is any news about the replacement ball top handles that you were considering manufacturing?

I'm chomping at the bit!

Thanks

Thanks for the feedback, guys!  And here I thought that rampy was screwing with me because I posted two pics of the shaft hole....   ;D

Grasshopper - I posted a tiny bit of info here (http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=2854) regarding the shafts.

I'll post more info w/ a final sell price as soon as I get it.  Thanks again!

The new knob is now available on the Oscar Controls website (http://www.oscarcontrols.com).  Sell price is $13.

I also received the knob today engraved with the MAME logo.  Unfortunately, it wasn't engraved as I had specified.  It came back at about .75 scale, and as dual lines.  It was *supposed* to be fully engraved and span across the knob diameter.  Although this engraving was done very well, it just wasn't what I was looking for.  I'm going to try one more knob and see if I can get it to turn out like I want.

If the next knob turns out well, I will have a batch engraved.  No idea on time frame here, or if I will even offer these for sure.  This has just been an experiment so far.

Here's a couple of pics of how this engraving looks:  (note, this knob was an unpolished prototype without knurling, not the knob being sold).

Just a note to let OSCAR know that I'll purchase in engraved knob as soon as  he gets them in.

And a nod of thanks for contributions to the community.

Thanks for the replies!  Like I mentioned before, the engraving was done very well, just not what I had in mind.  I would like it to be larger and have more contrast so it stands out more.  I'll post new pics when I get the next one.

Yes.  I mentioned right above the new pics that these are taken of the prototype knob which didn't have the knurling and wasn't polished like the finished knobs.

In other words, I sent the prototype knob out for test engraving.  Heh, this prototype should actually be made of gold instead of aluminum for how much $$ I have in it.   :)

Oscar,

What about making it out of titanium and anodizing the MAME part with diffrent colors?, wouldn't that be awesome?

I think Howard_Casto would agree with me on this, that those pictures are fake.  They are CGI, probably rendered in VOB or 3D Studio Max with Ambient lighting and Surface Bump Mapping to give that extra realism.

The nerve of some people trying to pass off CGI pictures as the real thing....shame on you... ;D

OY... is that gonna reach catch phrase status?  Will it be like in slashdot where every article/thread has a "imagine a beowolf cluster of these"  comment =P

Nice spinner top.  I actually like the double line effect.

What would look really cool... would be if there was a small raised circle arround the edge, and the Mame logo was raised... meaning that everything else was cut away.  Unfortunately... that would probably cost a ton.

Also, did the original have the lines on the side go both vertically and horizonally?  (As it looked the opposite) I think it would look much better if they only went vertically... and maybe spaced appart less.

I agree that a raised logo would look very cool, but may be expensive.  Perhaps "reverse-engraved"??  I think machining would be out, because that would probably cost as much as the rest of the knob.  You would also have a minimum radius, too, because of the end mill, and I think you may lose the super sharp edges of the logo.  Perhaps you could use a mill small enough to not leave a noticeable radius, but then you wouldn't be removing much material per pass.... Ahh, I'm rambling.

The knurl is vertical only.  I had (10) knobs made with a close spacing like what is used on my current aluminum capped knobs, but the rest of the first batch I had done with the large pitch knurl as shown in the first set of pictures.  This larger pitch is because I tried to copy the knurl spacing of the original Arkanoid knob, and it came out pretty close.

Well, maybe instead of engraving... make a sticker of some sort on it?   Maybe paint the knobs black (or blue), and a black (or blue)  sticker with the light blue mame logo on it?

I really like the double line.  Is it more expensive to have him knock out a couple more with the "wrong" logo before he fixes it for those of us who like it wrong?

I like the prototype *without* the engraving best.

AHH ! ! !

Good to hear that....
Those could have been cgi created by howard( using his special tricks)as he might still think those are fake.

OSCAR,
great work ;D and I would say leave it alone as is now.Just engrave the whole logo blue as mame logo is blue.
AND,sorry for the flame other day(you pc flame)

Wasn't on purpose :)
I was just letting you know that there wont be anyone here that would get a pc for like(I was pretty sure) $565.
Sorry for the uncool post ;)

Any chance that (for a price, of course) custom engraving would be available?  I'm sure it might be pricey, but it isn't like this is a cheap hobby anyway.

I'd be interested in getting ahold of some of the knobs, BLANK.

I currently have access to a laser engraver and would want to do custom engraving..

I'll have to get some aluminum and test out the laser on it, see what it can do..

I think a mame logo would look cool raised (leave the mame logo raised and sunken around it, leaving a lip near the edge)..

The knobs are already available without logos and are on the Oscar Controls order page.  No knobs will be available without the vertical knurl.  I had the prototype made without a knurl just so I could see how slippery it would be without it.  From playing a few rounds of Tempest & Arkanoid with it, I could imagine a lot of people might have complained it felt a bit too slick.  Especially if you used it on a heavy spinner like my Pro, a Blasteroids, or a Tron spinner.

Custom engraving is possible, but you would probably get a much better price locally than going through me.  The guy I'm going through is geared towards quantity engraving and doesn't like to do one-offs very well, and the setup charge would be $30 for every new design.

Hopefully I will have another engraved sample ready next week sometime.  I see that a few people actually like the looks of the first engraved knob, so if anyone wants that one, email me and we can arrange to get some done like that for you.  FYI - I'm anticipating the engraving is going to cost about $2-$3 more per knob, but I'll know more when I send a batch out.

I received the new knob today, and this is more of what I had in mind.  I am much happier with this one, and so I'm going to send a batch to be engraved like this.

What about anodizing then WHOLE THING and the etching for a silver MAME? Should be cheap and colorful!
