Title: Enlarging mounting holes on the I-PAC board
Post by: Jabba on December 05, 2004, 02:18:12 pm
I am going to mount an I-PAC without the mouting feet. I think I will use Peale's suggestion by using the bick pen method (cut into 5/8" pieces). I need to enlarge the mounting holes on the I-PAC board to accomodate a wood screw. Am I safe doing this or will I fry the board. Not sure if I will kill any *potential* circuits.

Thanks for the advice...

I used a drill to make the holes larger. No problem.

Be carefull, you may just snap the hole larger and then it won't be a hole anymore.

As long as you dont break any leads your all good..
one note of caution..
the G5 resin material that the board is made of is a carcinogen and acts like silica or glass in the lungs..This stuff embeds itself in there and never comes out  :o ..this leads to the same types of problems that asbestos is associated with..nothing like dying from drowning in your own fluids!
in its solid state it is intert and safe to handle or put in your mouth if you so wished..
but the dust created by drilling milling or whatever is quite harmfull.
i recomend wet drilling .

I used a drill bit and spun it with my fingers, it didn't take long and then there was no chance of a slip up.

Foam sticky tape works really well for most applications, as well.

buy..

smaller..

screws..

or use nails.. or use tape... or use mirror clamps..

but why drill on a $50+ item just to save a 10c screw?  Just too much of a chance to really really get pissed at yourself.

btw, I like the idea of mounting them in an old vhs plasic box... and screw that into the cabinet.  help protect them.

great idea!!
ive had a mounting problem with my J-pac.
the egret cabinet is all sheetmetal so theres no where to screw it into and to add insult to injury, resting it on the metal could cause a short.
ill give that shot tonite!
