Title: What Xbox MOBO should I get?
Post by: crashwg on December 04, 2004, 12:23:36 am
My xbox just crapped the bed today so I guess I have fix it.  :-\  I've seen on Ebay that people sell XBOX 1.0 mobo and HDD combo and also 1.2-1.5??? combos...  What should I get?  I'm planing on getting a modchip for it if that is of any importance.  I'm also planning on getting a sammy ;D

So anyways what MOBO should I get?

By the way, I'm getting error code 13!

error code 13 is a dashboard error... your dash isn't loading.  Did you try to do any type of exploit or anything at all to it?

I don't know the intricate details of the mobos.  The 1.6's are the newest, and are a bit more difficult to mod, so I would steer clear of those if you want a slightly easier install.

Really though, it shouldn't matter. You can get whatever version you want I would thing... I would just do some research to be sure the PSU would work for all versions and the like... as I said, I'm not so sure about all that.  I've never had to replace a mobo, I've just modded systems before.

Error 13 could mean your hard disk is toast.  Try booting it in a friends xbox (and vice versa their drive in your machine).  Probably not the mobo.

If you're getting a modchip anway, install the chip in your existing xbox and you may be able to repair what you've got.  The chip will allow you to boot a rescue/repair dvd like "Slayer's" and rebuild the hard drive files, or if that fails install a new hard drive.  If that works then you won't need a new mobo/hd combo.

As for motherboards, I really like 1.1's mainly for the 1meg tsop but that probably isn't an issue for you.

with v1.6 mb's you have to rebuild the LPC port when you fit a modchip

i think in pre v1.6 mb's it is not necessary - this means less soldering is required to fit a modchip.

I contacted the guy on ebay that's selling the MOBO/HDD combos about why he sold them in pairs and he told me that they are locked to eachother and not interchangable...  I shouldn't have to worry about this if I'm getting a modchip right?

he's talking about the ability to get on xbox live.  If that Motherboard/Hard Drive combination has logged onto Xbox Live before, then if you change the hard drive, you'll get the xbox banned from live.

Go to www.teamxtender.com and look at the xtender mod.  You can put 3 hard drives in your xbox, (2 extra + 1 original). You can then mod your xbox, and still use your xbox for live by turning off your chip and booting from the original drive.

If you're never planning on using live, it really doesn't matter however.

I'm not into live so I guess I don't have to worry much about that...  Well I guess I'll see if a modchip can fix my problem first and if that doesn't work get a new MOBO as cheaply as posible.  May have to wait till after the holidays though.
