Well, there's a whole host of things that can be done to deal with performance issues. But need more info.
* a new vid card might help a smidge, but that's probably not the weak link in this case - usually last place you look for a perf. problem w/mame
* More cpu power always helps (I happen to have a 450 or 466 amd k62 chip laying around... 20 beans as-is if you want it... it came out of a system where the powersupply toasted the mobo)
* Really need more info to "diagnose" your problem
1. which version of mame are you using? Dos, regular win mame, or win32 (gui) mame?
2. what os are you using?
3. Do you have hardware stretch on? scanlines?

Try using the amd compiled DOS version of MAME in pure dos (assuming you can get your sound card working in pure dos)
Try an older version of MAME before they added alpha blending and all that jazz to all drivers.
uhm... you could also lower sound quality to 22050
If all that doesn't help... you could use standalone emu for the more modern game (relatively speaking)
good luck!

sorry about that, i was in a rush to go out with the missus!
I am using win32 mame on a system with 128 ram running win98 as the os.... being new to the mame universe i don't have much knowledge of hardware stretch or scanline settings. I am usually a mac guy, and run mame on my g4 and my amd athlonxp1800 pc desk, so i am usually not wanting for horsepower, it's just that i have an old ibm laying around....
as for dos, i am pretty non-pc in my experience so dos is a frightening thing to me (really!) I'll take a look at disabling features to see if it frees up enouhg power... maybe i'll overclock the cpu if need be... (funny, i perfectly comfortable working with high voltage, overclocking processors, building instruments and ampplifiers and woodworking, but dos is scary!)
Thanks again!

Now I undestand your handle... you make guitars I take it?
Do you have a website for your work? Do you make boutique/custom tube amps too?
It's ok to be command line averse I guess... it's all about comfort levels.
hmmm... is your frame skip set to auto? Make sure in the video settings in mame32 that hwstretch is off and try it with scanlines off too at least initially to see how in fps it effects performance.
You might have better performance with an older version of mame (real old) like 35 or 36 or something depending on the game's you like and if they are included in that build.
