I downloaded both of these last nite and have been addicted ever since..

this game is total 8 bit shmup fun..RETRO MADNESS  ;D

I had to run this one is windows 95 compatibility mode to get my sound to work but who cares.. kick ass retro audio with this one..

Cho Ren Sha(Super running fire)  is the best..
why modern game designers with all their bells,whistles and ridiculous amounts of processing and memory available to them cant make titles that have the same visceral ,analog feel of these old school titles is beyond me..
ithink all these uber programmers should be forced to play old 8 bit titles as part of their curriculum..

Here's a good 'almost free' one.
The 4 level Demo is free

Space Tripper...Defender like, complete with reverse.
I haven't played in a couple years(I think I still have it installed)
But I think it's worth a try.

It looks like they have a newer Robotron type game too(Mutant Storm)
