Title: Cocktail dual 2-player games?
Post by: currygoat11 on December 01, 2004, 01:44:51 pm
Are there any good cocktail style dual 2-player games?  You know, so both can play at the same time on opposite sides of the cab?

I looked and found a Space Invaders clone which did it; any others?  Any info would be much appreciated. Thank you!

There are some games that are not truly "cocktail games" that will work that way.
Space Duel is a good example of this.
The scores are at one side of the screen, but it is easily playable by two players from opposite ends of the table.

WARLORDS!  Yea baby!  It's actually 4 player but it's easily playable with just 2...

ahhh, this is close to my heart!! these are the dual 2 player games i have found so far for my cocktail cab:

armor attack
blades of steel
demolition derby
eliminator (get both versions, one is much harder if 1 player, practice on the easy one)
hot shots tennis
space duel
*space invaders II
*tehkan world cup
tetris (cocktail)
*warlords

the ones with asterisks are must haves. they play well straight up so that even if your friends have never played them before, they'll learn quickly. demolition derby and warlords are 4 player but you can do it with 2. i configured controls for diagonal players for warlords. hot shots tennis is great but takes a bit to figure out. tehkan world cup was originally with a trackball but plays well enough with 8 way joystick. and if you're playing against a friend, well you have the same handycap anyway  :)

Atari football is a good one, but you'll need a trackball on both sides.

Gauntlet is perfectly playable on a cocktail.

Atari Tetris cocktail is the only one I knew of that was directly meant  to be played head to head on a two player, 4 way each system.

How? The joystick direction would mess you up. You could remap the joystick inputs within Mame I suppose.

EDIT:  yeah it works if you just remap the up,down, left, right of each player control to offset it. cool!

Sorry to dredge up an old topic, but I think this is a good source of information.  I've found that some of the horizontal top-view racing games can work on a vertical cocktail cab, such as:

Bad Lands
Ironman Stewart's Super Off Road (+ Track Pack)
Super Sprint
Hot Rod
Embargo

My vertical cocktail cab has an 8-way, 3 buttons and a player start on each side.  By setting P1 to the joystick + start button and P3 to buttons 1-3 I am able to play 4p Warlords (it's a poor setup but hey, it works) - I assume you can do Hot Rod, Super Sprint and Embargo the same way.

I agree this is an excellent candidate for a wiki entry.

I haven't seen wizard of wor on this list either.  The cocktail version is actually supposed to be played on a vertical monitor (according to KLOV) even though the game is horizontal.  It's absolutely on my vertical cocktail machine.  Like gauntlet, just remap the joystick directions and you're done.  In fact, any top down game works well like that.  I also added alien syndrome to my machine.

You can add Hat Trick (Hockey) to that list.

yes!  that's the other one I couldn't remember.  I added that one to my machine just a couple weeks ago.

Here's a wiki entry for this (at the bottom).  Please go edit it if you ever find any more.
