Title: Ikaruga possible on mame?
Post by: javeryh on December 01, 2004, 10:30:13 am
Does anyone think that Ikaruga is coming to mame anytime soon or would I be better off running the dreamcast version somehow?

Since it runs on the Dreamcast hardware, and there are no plans to add it anytime soon, go with a Dreamcast.

ikaruga is pure evil...
why anyone would want to play such a ridiculous title is beyond me..
its pure memorization..not skill... i dont get what drives all the hype beyond designer loyalty..

i hate puzzle games with a passion
ikaruga is less a game than it is a software based torture device.. :P

Umm, it's a shooter man, and a pretty darn good one.

I think this site pretty much sums up my opinion on the matter and my opinion towards people who don't give the genre respect.

That is an absolutely superb review of a superb game.

And it made me laugh. A lot.

(NOT looking to start a flame)
but, ikaruga is not a shooter..
on the surface maybe,in appearance yes,but its undeniably a puzzle game..and worse than that its whole premise is based on brute memorization..
wheres the skill or challenge in that?
for many, the game is the christ of shooters for them..for me its a totally unappealing memorization based, color matching puzzle game..
i think the game is improperly classified..a shooter is a manic struggle of one ship against an onslaught of wave after wave of enemy ships bent on your anhilation..
90% of the time no ones even shooting at you,its all indirect patterns. your just something passign thru something thats occuring regardless of your presence..ikaruga is all color matching and pattern memorization..
just my opinion..but its not a shooter...and its definetly not fun..
at least for me..

LOVE THE REVIEW!! hilarious lol

I think Ikaruga is a cool game.  Looks sharp too.

Looking forward to it being more stable on Chankast (is that emulator still being developed?  I haven't looked in ages)

The last piece on the maddoxx site was funny

900,946 people bought Ikaruga only to find out that they suck at video games.

...is galaga not a shooter?  I don't know of many shooters that randomly generate the bad guys.  Ikaruga is a shooter.  Memorization is just a common element in shooters.

For that matter, the enemies in Tiger-Heli, or 1942, or Twin Cobra, all appear in the same place and patterns, so you win those games by memorization, but I would classify them as shooters.

And the same really applies to PacMan, it's as much memorization as skill, but I wouldn't call it a puzzle game. . .

The shooter genre, by definition:

a. You have something you control.

b. It fires bullets or a weapon of some sort.

c. You generally fly around or drive around and the screen scrolls either horizontally or vertically.  There are exceptions to this one, but they are generally denoted by an additional sub-genre.

Those are the ONLY requirements needed for a game to be considered a shooter.  These are the generally agreed upon requirements we use and triggerfin's catlist uses.

Ikaruga=Shooter / Flying Horizontal

And the whole black and white thing, that's called innovation and it's the game's selling point.  It's why so many people like it.  If you don't like it than that's fine, but that doesn't change what genre it is.   You must have not payed much atenttion whne you played it as bullets often come from ground-based turrents or facilities.  Again, this is a staple in the shooter genre, although admittedly, this one over does it a tad.

Of course I don't consider tekken a fighting game, rather a flaming pile of marketing b.s. and I don't consider football games playable, much less games, so to each his own. ;)

(No I didn't write that review, but apparently I have a mental twin as this guy always hit's my points dead center.)

Also, every single solitary shooter game I've ever played has enemies that generate at the same spot every time.  As the others say, it's the norm, not the exception.

Tiger, for the record pacman is classified as a maze game, i.e. it created it's own genre, which shows just how good it is.

Actually I could expand that to all sports games in general, with the exception of bowling.  As a trackball gives you a very similar control it's kinda fun.  More importantly, you see a new bowling game maybe once every 5 years, not once every season, in which the newest "bowling rookies" are added to the exact same engine and some corporate, greedy, sobs, call it a new game.

I guess what I'm trying to say is sports games aren't bad, they just haven't made a new one since 1996 (when 3d games were introduced to the consoles).  I used to be a mark for wrestling games, until I got sick of getting the same game year after year.

It's funny that in 1997, when acclaim had the wwf liscense, the newest features added were real voice clips, authentic entrance videos, and a carreer mode.  Since thq took over the liscense, it's now 7 years later and they are just now offering all of the features I just mentioned.   :(

Y'all are right on the mark about sports games.  There are almost never any *real* changes to them.  Of course, that's the nature of sports games.  They are somewhat limited by the rules and structure of the sport they are trying to simulate.

I usually pick one of each sport, buy it, and then keep it until the console becomes obsolete.

Yep, funny how many people are suckered into buying each and every revision of these games tho.  And they love 'em!  :-\

I agree and disagree.  Madden, for example overhauls a major portion of the game every year.  Running this year, passing next year, um....I guess running again the year after that.  Yeah, it's a ripoff.  Fifa is loads of fun, though.
