By the way, this brings up a good topic... Any of you PS2 buffs seen this new re-design? It's incredible! I was expecting it to be thinner as I had always heard, but it's actually TINY in all dimensions!
-
i'll take a stab at this..he wants to make a big dinosour turn into a mini poddle!!!
technically, its not possible due to the new slim line pstwoo using newer boards. check eb or gamestop as you can turn in your old ps2 for credit for a new one...

Although it may look sleek, it overheats and then resets when playing games that take a lot of horse power like the new Grand Theft Auto.

I haven't heard of that? Got any sites I could read about that problem? (I know GTA San Andreas makes my cd drive click for some reason!)

I've been told by a couple of people that actually own one and GTA:SA that this is a complete myth.
However, there's no place for a hard drive so I'll stick with my PS2 fattie.

I believe the board is completely different in the new PS2s. I don't think they even have a modchip for the new design yet.
Stick with the fatty and just get HDadvance and a new had drive. My PS2 cab will only have games I can run off of the HD.
-
The DMS4 chip is advertised as being compatable with the new PS2, but I have no idea if this is in fact the case.

I heard it was the old PS2's that overheated and had laser problems, and that the new PS2's have no hard drives and thus need memory cards to save anything. Makes me not want to get a PS2 at all...
-
The Ps2 never had a hard drive.

The older PS2's did have laser problems... newer versions have been fixed, including the newer slim PS2. I've heard the newer ones overheat online, but ppl I know that have it have never had the problem. I've owned 3 different "fat" PS2's and never had one overheat, even after longgggggg game sessions.
PS2's never came stock with a hard drive, so you needed a memory card anyway, so I'm not really sure what you mean there. You're thinking about an xbox. In fact, even with a hard drive installed, I don't think you can use it as a memory card, but I may be mistaken there since I've never tried to do it. I have HDloader on my PS2 and certainly haven't seen an option to turn the HDD into a memory card.
Don't get a PS2 if you don't want
-

the PS2 DOES have a hard drive, it just didn't come stock. Sony sells an official 40gig drive for Final Fantasy XI and "future games."
You can also hook up any standard hdd to a Sony Broadband adapter and use HDloader or HDadvance.
Quick edit: There are to my knowledge a number of modchips that work with the new slimmer PS2. The motherboards inside are in fact, not very different from the older ones. I've already seen quite a number of modded slim PS2's go up for sale.

It was on evilavatar - a gaming news site - when the slim ps2 was first released. Unfortunately, I could not find the news article in the archive. I have a feeling that these people had the vents blocked or had it on top of another warm appliance or something of that nature.
Here are some cool photos of the new ps2s interior:

You can see that it is actively cooled.

No, you cannot use a HD inside a PS2 as a memory card under any cicumstances that I'm aware of except... There's a program that allows you to transfer saves to your HD, but that doesn't do you any good because games do not have the ability to look for game saves on the HD anyways! It's basically just a marketing ploy to get you to buy the product I guess. I mean, who wants to load up some stupid program, x-fer the save you want to use onto the memory card and then finally switch disks to the game you intend to play? Same thing with that stupid USB memory stick someone came out with, you can't save and load directly to the stick...

That's pretty much what I had thought, but wasn't 100% sure... thanks for clarifying. I like it when it turns out my guess was right haha.

Wait just a minute....those two pancakes are STAKED on his head? :o
I can see the two pancakes, but for the life of me, they did a DARNED fine job of hiding the stakes in the stacks ;)
Stingray, are you sure it's not that the cat food you feed your cat smells like cat breath?

The advantage is to back up your saved games from the memory card, not use it directly from your HD. I have kids and they tend to delete other peoples profiles. I hate it when I've worked hard to unlock crap in a game only to find they deleted my profile the next time I try and play it.
You could always spend 10 bux and get a memory card for the kids and put yours away.
I just don't see the point of putting saves on the hard drive
-
I just don't see the point of putting saves on the hard drive
Although my HD doesn't do this, I can see how it would be handy. I'd like to back up all of my old saves on my HD to clear space on the memory card. With that kind of save storage capacity I could have a save for every level/ mission of every game. Pointless? Maybe, but I like goofy tech toys.

I'm all for goofy tech toys too, but the fact that I'd have to load up a cd to transfer a save to my memory card (after finding it), then actually transfer it, then start up the game, and then finally load up the game..... its too much hassle for me. I'd rather just have a few memory cards.
-
Well since I already have a hard drive, I just think it would be convenient to be able to back up my saves onto it. I can see that I'm not going to change your mind on this though. ;) ;)

Well, instead of saving to a memory card or a HD, why not just buy a new PS2 and .....nevermind. ;)
What was this thread about again? Something about "me to want convert PS2 mine"?

I'd go with the DS since it can play GBA games.

That's my current thinking, except I can't also buy her a bunch of games with it. She's always loved golf games... anyone played the DS version of Tiger Woods Golf?
