Title: Omega Race MAME Project

I was able to get an old beat up Omega Race cabinet, and I have put pics of the construction online. I've only seen 2 others online who did a MAME'ing of this type of cabinet. Stop by and take a look, and if you have any questions please feel free to drop me a line.

These Omega Race cabinets seem to be coming out of the wood work.  I just got one myself and planned on MAMEing it.

At risk of starting a flame-war, I always thought that game sucked. I had it on my VIC-20. Very boring game. Some goes for Gorf, the other bastard child.  ;D

Have to admit though that the cabinets were pretty cool.  Even though the game sucked.

looks pretty slick.  i like how you didn't extend the control panel beyond the original cabinet dimensions.

a couple of questions.
what is the control panel made of?  is it stainless steel?  aluminum?  and how did you get the finish?

also, what did you soak the original glass in to get the old, corroded artwork off?

The control panel is made of MDF shelving (has a nice curved edge on one side). The silver is actually metallic cabinet/contact paper that I picked up at Walmart. It has a peel stick backing and is fairly thick, and slick on the surface. It gives it a nice look, and was easy to put on.

As far as getting the flaking paint off (mine was about 50% gone), I soaked it in a tub of hot water for a few hours. A large quantity came off then. For the harder stuff I used a pain scraper and Gunk-off or Goo-gone (can't remember exactly). I used that to remove the adhesive left from the vinyl stickers on the cabinet once I removed them with a heat gun and elbow grease.

My control panel is about 1" longer than the original, so I had to move the wooden panel/glass support back. The original smoked/slightly mirrored glass that was in there fit in this new spot perfectly (I didn't even consider it when I moved the wood), so now the monitor is totally blacked out. This isn't the front glass (which now is too large and would need about 1/2" removed off the bottom), but the glass that the game was reflected on and picked up the side art to give it a 3-d effect. I used a combination of black poster board and magic marker to blacken the monitor. I have some new side/marquee art I am working on that will give it the original look but still be custom, having it say Omegarcade instead.

Here is my new sideart I created at the office today.  I wanted to give it the same look as the original stickers, but clean it up and give it a new name - The Omegarcade..

I was wondering why you painted over the side art when it didn't look all that bad.  Now it's explained.  Quick glance and you don't even notice the name change.  Good job.

Actually had to strip it off, since it was a large sticker. The pictures don't show it that well, but it was gouged/scratched pretty bad. There were some chunks out of it as well as large scratches/cuts. The front sticker below the coin door has some wear damage from where people would prop thier feet on the machine while playing it, but I figured I would either find a replacement sticker for it or duplicate the original somehow. But even with its wear it is in much better shape than the side ones were.

Aint they the bastard children? If they don't work then it is like BOOM, instant part out.

I must be the absolute only person in America actually restoring a Gorf from an empty cabinet.

I now have everything but the guts.

Gorf was one of those rare old school games that I really never enjoyed.Really not sure why maybe it was the sound or the gameplay but it did have a neat cabinet.I still shoved a bunch of quarters in gorf what can I say it must have been the cabinet/art.
p.s. Paige you are definitely the mad professor of this board and it warms my heart.

I just put in a new custom marquee. It is a 4.1"x24" print on heavy coated paper sanwiched between two pieces of lexan. I also installed on the inside an Ipac2 and put molex connectors on the control pad. This makes the wiring alot nicer and lets me have a keyboard for pass-thru, as well as being able to build alternate control panels.
