Title: Standard monitor width?
Post by: Dave Wave on November 27, 2004, 12:02:22 pm
Does anybody have an idea of what the standard with of an arcade monitor was? For example are pacman and galaga both 19" monitors?

Secondly, is there enough room in a standard arcade cab to rotate a standard monitor?

Thanks,

-Dave

19" is the standard size tube for classic upright cabs.  Its a measurement of the screen diagonal not width.  The monitor frame and mounting points are normally square so yes you could mount horizontal or vertical.

19" was the standard for many (but not all) classic games. Starting around 1990, the 25" size started to become standard then 27". Alot of game operators are complaing that the newer & bigger monitors add so much weight to the games that their moving crews are getting injured (bad backs) because of the heavy games!

As to having room to rotate a monitor, it all depends on the particluar cabinet and monitor. Remember how the corner of Gorf's monitor stuck out the back door and it had that black plastic protector?

Also remember...

TONS of classic games are nearly implayable on a 27" TV.

for instance.. Robotron...  To get the 'Zen' of robotron you need to be able to see the entire screen at one shot.  Your periferal (sp?) vision works MUCH butter on a 19" monitor then a 27"  (I use a bezel for games like this)

but a 27" monitor in horizontal is about the size of a vertical 19... never tested it, but looks about right.
