Title: Thinking about getting an SGI
Post by: paigeoliver on November 27, 2004, 02:31:11 am
I have always wanted one of the obscure 'nix based computers, and now it seems like they have finally come down enough where I can afford one.

How is that one? Is it priced right?  :police:

If you want an old unix workstation you might also consider something from SUN, an ultra 10 or something. Solaris is the most popular form of unix (by sales) and still in very active devlopment - not sure about IRIX. The other advantage of the old sun workstations is they can run the most recent versions of solaris and modern solaris apps, even Solaris 10 when it comes out (january).

Disclaimer: I'm an SE for Sun so I may be a little biased

SGI systems use a proprietary video connector design. You'd need to find a 13W3 to HD15 video cable to hook it up to a normal PC monitor.

I don't think an Octane uses that connector, but I could be wrong.  I have an O2 that uses standard VGA.

I dunno either. I have a SGI 21" monitor that has both connectors on it. Just figured it was worth pointing out as the possibility exists that it might use it and the seller assumes a prospective buyer would know this.
