Title: Opinions on 7th button distance
Post by: subzero23 on November 25, 2004, 04:51:33 am
I'm not sure what to do with my 7th button (7th button = the A button from Neo-Geo games added to a Street Fighter layout)
like this

I had the same question when I was doing my layout.  I looked at different "commercial" 7-button layouts after I couldn't find a real diagram for any layouts of this kind (6-button layouts/dimensions are everywhere, but 7th was harder to find for me), and the differences in location for the 7th button had a lot of variation from one product to the other.  At least from what I could tell from the pictures...

The above advice is a good idea.  I just played around with the spacing and kept printing out layouts to see what felt comfortable for my hands to go along with the standard 6-button spacing.  I ended up going just a bit closer than the optimum distance for my thumb, since I figured not everyone would have the same size hands as myself.  I'd rather have it a little too close than too far away.

What should you to do, is to create a cardboard mock-up, with the silhouette of your hand, later open your fingers and  mark exactly where they would be the buttons.
I do not believe that a standar mesaurement will be better than your own hand to fit  the exactly place to put the buttons.
I did that way on my CPO.....and it goes really well.

I put mine down and to the left of the main 6 buttons, close enought to the stick so it works as the REVERSE button for Defender. I use to for Defender/Stargate way more than for Neo-Geo games.

BTW- Your cp art is amazing, why isn't their more art like this?

Because it's hard to do!  I'm a bit stuck at the artwork phase...

I agree, awesome artwork tho Lord Hiryu :)

Thanks for the commentaries.
It pleases to me that you like my panel.
Anthonylitz....my buttons layout is the following one:
   1 2 3
1 4 5 6
This way... by defect I have Capcom style layout, and I only map the buttons for the NeoGeo style.
It can seem tedious....but I only take 1 minute in forming each game.
Kind Regards.

P.D.:Later I will raise an image to explain itself better.

I chose the same layout for the same reason.  6 buttons for SF2 style games, and the bottom 4 (including angled "A" red button) for NeoGeo games.

Here's a shot of the CP:

The link doesn't work
but yeah I decided on a button the same horizontal distance away (1.5") but angled at 25' below the horizontal line. So I'm treating it as another button in the bottom row just tilted 25 degrees.

My color set up will be yellow(for 7th button) then street fighter style: red green blue.

Works for me.

Click that, then "Images".  It's towards the bottom on the left-hand menu.

My colour scheme was chosen to match the neo-geo colours.  Check any Neo Geo game that includes a "how to play" (most of them do) for the scheme.

Thanks for the info on that 7th button you guys!  Like I was saying I am pretty sure I am gonna add one!!!  There are just too many Neo-Geo games that are worth playing, which we all know or we would be talking about this right now

This is what I was thinking of doing so I don't have to change the settings in all neo-geo games. (I know there are other alternatives)

What do you think?  That way the top 4th button is kinda out of the way during SF play.  Plus I wouldn't have to configure anything different.

Smart idea.  One of the bummers of my setup is the need to reconfigure Neo Geo games.  Something like above would be far less setup and fiddling post-completion.
