Title: Daphne & Dragons Lair
Post by: vader on November 24, 2004, 03:36:11 pm
Ok, getting a tad bored and decided to dive into Daphne.  I know there are numerous readme's and this is not the easiest thing to set up.  I know the rom's are readily available, buy you need to find alternate means as to getting the video files ( purchasing PC version or such ) can anyone steer me towards a site which can explain in more detail of how this all works ? I've been to the daphne site, but was looking for more of a tutorial type instruction.  Also, what is the total size of the video files required ? estimate.....

Thanks,

Tim

Almost all of the videos are over 1GB in size.

actually , getting the aniveristy ed of dragons lair from digital leirsure then running the dvd2daph ( i think that the program name ) is a breeze , it's not all that hard to set up basically it's

install program
configure game to point to your frame file and rom file
setup controls

it's when you start to get .. err .. alternet , mpegs is where it gets complex ( and 1gig per game is about right ) ... digital leisrue has i think 3 games that work on Daphne with little or no effort.

If you look hard enough you can find the laserdisc mpeg(s)for dragons lair and space ace on the net. These are much higher quality than ripping the files off the dvd with dvd2daph program.I tried both of them and the laser disc is far superior and worth tracking down.

I get the feeling you think Daphne is hard to configure!
It can be challenging, plus the people on the message board are .....shall we say......not always polite. kinda like an entire board full of Howard Castro's. ;)
Daphne is well worth setting up. I worked on it for three days and then I figured it out. The key is to understand that you have to point to a framefile which points to video. With mame and the consoles you just need a rom. Daphne needs to know WHERE the video is.
Once you manage to set up one game the rest are easy. I believe there are burners that make disks as well! ;)

You sure about that? I though the DVD's were remastered off the laserdiscs anyway? I've a couple of versions of dlair and there was not much in it, but I could be wrong. Are there any dats for these? Or is that a dangerous question.....?

A newer Digital Leisure box set will look really close to the original LD. The older versions did not look very good.

The entire laserdisc game community is like that, both the Daphne community and the guys who collect the real games. Probably because much of laserdisc collecting is based around the "I got it, you don't" brag.

DL has been kind enuf to support daphne and provide the disks for lair and sa , please support them :)
as for others well , their are a few games that the orginal owners either cannot be found , dont want to release anything , or plain just dont care.

I am positive about this it may look close but it doesnt look as good.To the person that said support digital leisure ,I have for many moons but they are running the Dragons Lair Franchise into the ground. They dont support there products well or have updates often enough.Did you try the Dragon's Lair 3 demo,it really sucked and is not worthy of the tag DL3.I have a dragons lair dvd that still fails to work with xp even with there latest patch. The only thing DL has done well is keep the franchise alive and milk it for every penny they can get.Just my opinion...

I bought the 3 DVD-ROM set from DigitalLeisure and will not purchase from them again. They have not re-written their DVDs or CDs to support the new versions of WMP. It sill asks for Directdraw. I had to install a bunch of older software to get Dragon's lair 2 to work to where I could play it.

As for Dragon's Lair and SPace Ace. I used DVDtoDaph or whatever it's called to convert those games over. They run great on my machine.

Castro is the communist DICTATOR of Cuba.  ;D

P.S. it was a joke!

I do appreciate the things you do for the community, just having a little fun with your name and um......."posting history" if you will!
