If your local mall has a 'Spencers Gifts' Id check there I picked up a plug-in rotary light with multiple color lenses (red / blue) for $14 just before halloween. Knowing that place it is a year round item.
Hope this helps,

Don't know if this would work for you or not, but J. C. Whitney has

I may have an old "dash light" (12v) I will look through my old equipment tonight. If I don't @ home, I may be able to come up with an old one from our station... everyone is switching to LED so there may be a few around.

Hey
That would be totally awsome and I would be very greatful!!

I came here to see if anyone recommended J.C. Whitney...and if Firefighter can find you an honest to goodness one real life FD one, BONUS!
As for the cigarette lighter hookup, I am FLAT OUT POSITIVE you can do it. See if you can find the case mod somewhere of the guy who hooked up a coffee pot to his computer, see if you can find someone who put in an automotive-style ciggy lighter (you'll find LOTS of those around, I've seen 5+ cases with this particular mod....so it's definitely do-able.
Cool idea, and you're one phat uncle :D

Frozen CPU's lighter jack, with molex connector - WAY easy to install! (http://www.frozencpu.com/cgi-bin/frozencpu/cig-01.html)

that is totally cool but what kind of power does it use?
thx

while you CAN use one of those cigarette lighters in your computer, you can completely get rid of the middleman (car plug) altogether.
Like those links show, a cigarette lighter uses ground and 12v, as do PC power supplies. If you got one of these lights, just rip the cigarette lighter part off and use the 2 bare wires. Wire those up to a molex connector, and you're all done. You could wire in a simple switch also if you wanted to ability to turn the light on/off as opposed to it being on whenever the PC is on.

i'm interested to see how this cab turns out...any pics?

If you are in Canada, Canadian Tire has those at around $20 each, and Wal-Mart also around $16.00.

Just so you all know, a car battery outputs 12v, and thus so does the cig lighter.
-
Cool I am in Canada! I will check those two stores...
Outlet is a regular plug? or car? I would like a plug adapter.
What exactly is it called? the item that is...the type of light, so I know what to ask for.
thx
