A while back someone posted pictures of a bartop built around one of those 5-in-1 Namco joysticks that sell for $15-$20. I've searched, but can't locate it. Anybody remember who posted it or where it ended up?
Thanks
-
Thinking of this?
-
That's way nicer than the one I saw... and probably the one he's thinking about. It was a Pacman and it looked like it was made by a 12 year old.
There was a long debate over it on the RGVA newsgroup because the guy selling the "bartop" was not being honest about it using a Jakks Pacific toy... He even went so far as to talk about how it could use coins for credits, but that he had not hooked it up, so therefore it was set to free play. Real shady guy...
-
I've got a pacman one too.
-
Here's a link to another thread where a namco 5in1 was used in one of the designs by bishmasterb....
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,23215.0.html
I'm working on a couple of xmas projects that are modeled after ms pac/galaga style bartops created by shrinking the dimensions found at www.jakobud.com and then cutting off below the control panel.
I toyed with using a jaaks namco 5in1, a dreamcast with dmame, but finally concluded to go with using microatx motherboards and 10" SVGA monitors running good ole mame.
-
It looks even better in person. I got my Berzerk cab for jimmyjet and was very impressed when I seen the Galaga Bartop. Very cool!
-
None of those are exactly the one I was thinking of, but they give me exactly what I was looking for -- an example.
I was thinking about putting a 5in1 into a bartop to give my 6-year-old a problem-free arcade. I just don't want to deal with stuffing one of my spare computers into a cabinet and configuring MAME!
Thanks for the links and examples....now to find the time to make something.....
-
People are now making them and being 100 percent honest about them on ebay and STILL getting really high prices for them.
My only issue with these is that the image quality is not the best, it has some noticeable static.
The best legal one I have seen is the sega genesis one.
Or, if the booth at your mall hasn't been shut down yet then grab the NES one, with the so called 10,000 games (seems to be only 45 unique titles).
-
I know which one you were talking about, I found the link for it on the google group, but it looks like the pictures have been removed already:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=13716&item=6106512803&rd=1
It was really bad, it looked like a wood box that had the corners cut off on one end. Go to the arcade collectors google group (http://groups-beta.google.com/group/rec.games.video.arcade.collecting?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8) and do a search within that group for "wtf bartop" and you'll find their old thread.
If you search ebay for "bartop" you can usually see the latest bartop arcades for sale there. Looks like there are 2 of the Jakks ones on there now, one from jimmyjet (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=13716&item=6135203904&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW) and a new pacman one from somebody else (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=62053&item=6136128709&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW).
-
I've been thinking about building one of these for my brother in law. He really likes my MAME cab, but knows nothing about computers. I guess if I set up a real MAME system right he wouldn' have to know anything about computers, but I really don't want to do lifetime tech support on the thing.

looks like jimmjet got the shaft--guy bid 600$ and registered just for that auction--wait and see if that pans out--if he did get $600 for one--holy crap! good on you! ;D
-
dont these run off of batteries? How would you hook it up so it plugs into the wall..?
anybody
Thanks

Jimmyjet has had a few of these on ebay, I can't tell if he's selling multiple machines or if he keeps getting dead beat bidders and is selling the same one. Care to share Jimmyjet? Hope you're getting your money.

we got one of those booths in our mall. I was wondering about the legalities of them.........
-
I think I've read (on these forums somehwere) that those booths are closing pretty fast (nintendo isn't too happy with them obviously), so I'm guessing that they aren't the most legal toys. If you want one, you better pick one up quick before yours gets shut down.
-
Those things are all over the place around here. I just bought a few with Galaga, PacMan, Bomb Jack, Mappy, Arabian, and a slew of other arcade games (along with some NES and some crap too). Paid $12 each for them. I give them to kids around here to play with. I actually have one myself just for fun.
FYI, the "2005" edition also has Ms Pac Man as well.....
-
Here's a place that sells those all in one NES controllers for $20 +S&H.
http://www.magnetosupply.com/
Can't vouch for them as I've never bought from them. Just posting the link for interested parties.

-
So far I have had no deadbeat bidders. This last one worries me a bit though. We'll see if the money comes through.
I did have one that got damaged beyond repair in shipping. I bring these to a local pack and ship place, they pack and ship for a fee. It is a bit of a headache and I am trying to make it right for the buyer.
If you have the time and skill, these are a great money maker this time of year. I fear that window is fast closing. I'm sure the bids will be half as much in january.

Was just reading a review of these (NES all in one) at http://www.promoguy.net/archives/002438.php
I wouln't pay $50.00 at a mall for one
apparently you can get them for $10.00 (if you want to buy 100) from
http://video-games-cat.ioffer.com/i/POWER-PLAYER-SUPER-JOYSTICK-76000-VIDEO-GAMES-4596521
I wonder if any one has one of these on their Cab.
-
They sell for about 20 bucks on ebay
-
That "Power Player" booth at my local mall is a total joke. The guy sits there and claims it runs 76,000 games? Direct rip-off of Nintendo; the games appear to be the exact Nintendo titles with their Nintendo logos/copyrights somehow removed from the title screens. There's a long list of games to scroll through - the list is endless - the game names repeat themselves! I don't understand how this booth can remain clearly selling bootlegged, copyrighted material. I might as well setup a Mame cabinet booth in there with 4,900 MAME ROMS included! Only $3000 a pop!
-
Is that nintendo one and this arcade one (http://www.9thtee.com/funstuff.htm) the same thing (just different controller design)? I'm curious if the arcade one has arcade games, or nintendo games on it (if it were arcade games like the jakks ones, it could be worth picking one up, but if it's just the nintendo one, I don't think it'd be worth it). Anyone know?

At one point even ThinkGeek.com was selling one of these "superjoys". I had emailed them and told them there was no way they were legal. They replied that they had been assured they are. Well, you don't seem them on sale there anymore.
At the time, I even went to the seller's website and posted in their forum that it was impossible that so many licenses had been cleared for so many high profile games. (The shear number of royalty payments required would completely wipe out any possible profit at the price these things sell.)

1000 variations to them
yeah that's part of the scam. How can there be 1000 varations to a game? I wouldn't buy one out of principle alone.
here's an article on Nintendo's lawsuit

Hi, just wonder if anyone know where I can buy one of those 5-in-1 units in Australia so I can build one of my own.
Thanks in advance;

Target, K-Mart, Big W for a start. Target had them on special last weekend (except the Ms Pac-Man version).

Damo, if they don't have a store that sells them in your neck of the globe, drop me a PM and we can set up some way that I'll buy & send you one.
I dunno the cost for shipping, that's all we'd have to figure out, I'd do this only for the actual cost for you - hey, it's Christmas, I'm feeling all gooey inside ;D

QVC has a Namco 7in1 that is supposidly only available from them.
I saw them advertising it on TV and they said it was a QVC exclusive or something, and only available from them with the two extra games. (don't know if that's true)
It also had a high score feature that would remain even if unplugged or power loss.
I don't think the regular ones have saved high scores, Do they?
Mine is out of commision right now. It's in pieces ready for a hack.

Thanks for that link Lindner24 - I didnt know they had 30 in one commodore games!!! That rocks, they dont say what ones though. Is this company located in the US? Havn't seen these in Australia, the hunt continues . . .
Went to Big W today, thay had the namco 5 in 1($19.95) as well as an Atari 10 in one ($29.95).

Thanks capt. Potato! I have all those stores in my City. I'll check them out today.
I had a quick look at these myself this week at target in Oz as they where on sale.
The only thing that stopped me buying a few to fact that the packaging said they are PAL (regioned for Australia), not NTSC. On that note I assume the games run at 50fps, not 60fps.
I'd rather get some from the US as most tvs here have NTSC support anyway...

The 2 extra games are Rally X and Bosconian, but that really doesn't matter because they are on the pacman controller anyway http://www.jakkstvgames.com/namco.html.
However I am not sure I would pay double plus shipping ..for 2 more games . One store, I beleive it was Target

I've been watching this bartop on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=62053&item=6136128709&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW) and it's getting close to finishing. I like the design (I usually don't like the bartop designs I see here, no offence JimmyJet), but I like this design. I wouldn't be surprised if I could gut it and mame it, but even if I couldn't, it would still be cool since it plays the jakks stuff. Can anyone see any reason why I shouldn't do it? I'm close enough to this guy that I could probably pick it up locally and avoid shipping costs. It's ending soon, so any guidance you can give would be great.
-
Yeah, that's a neat design. If I ever end up building a bartop, I'd likely build something similar.

-
Thats a nice look bartop - your right!!! A lot better than a lot of the bartops ive seen in my travels through the net.
A lot of them are just too "boxy" if you know what I mean.
-
I have been eyeing that bartop as well. I love that thing. My next couple will have to be modified a bit.
jim
-
Jim, I think you should make them with a marquee up top (like LordDamo said, most bartops end up looking very "boxy"). I hope you're not offended by my comments, I really do like your machines (I have kept my eye on your galaga machines in the past, very sharp), just my personal taste.
-

This be true, but you really want to play Bosconian with an eight way, not a four way. It's darn near unplayable on the Pac-Man version.
Not sure about Rally-X, if it's eight or four way.
-
no offense to anybody... but the thing I don't like about that ebay one is the screws holding on the cp. They look like drywall screws.
I mean, if you're going to put that much time into something...

I JUST WENT A BOUGHT ONE OF THESE 5 IN 1'S!!! sorry for shouting, im just as happy as a kid in a candy store.
Thanks Drew for your offer, but one I tracked one down (one of the last 3 left in my city, called them and got them to put it asside - it was the only one left when I got there 20 mins later) I figgured with the cost of currency conversion and postage it would have worked out about the same price($39.99 inc. $3.64 GST - bloody Howard).
Just got a few q's that have come to mind:
Hands up whos acually hacked one of these? How hard was it? Exactally how did you attach the 6volt transformer to the battery terminals (IE which ones or was it all of them)?
Also I have a copyright question. does owning one of these units actually alow you to have copys of the applicable roms? As its a licenced product, I would think yes - but just woudering.
Any way, im off to play more Galaxian . . .

Sorry - I should have done this before posting. I just cracked it open. It looks like a damn easy hack.
Ed ONeill, have go got any links to some good plans? Just thought I would ask while I posting, thanks.

LordDamo ...I haven't got any plans yet and Santa didn't bring the 5 in 1 joysticks yet even though my credit card statement says santa bought them... ;D
I am thinking of PM ing bishmasterb to see if he can send the plans for his cab design

As a woodworking "idiot" I would love to see plans for bishmasterb's cabinets. I was going to build a UA2 but I'm moving in 3 months, this bartop would be great to keep me busy till then.
Please let us know if we can get the plans.
