Title: Painting Plastic Monitor Case
Post by: SteveJ34 on November 21, 2004, 08:36:24 am
I've got a nice 10" SVGA monitor which is going into a mini vertical bartop project.

Originally when I was thinking of using a 14-15" monitor I was going to decase but this one has a case design that will work well with a bezel in front of it.

I'd like to paint the case black tho to hide any edges that might show.....any suggestions for paint type or method of painting?

I figure just get some spray paint in a black matte or semi gloss finish and spray away?

What do others recommend that have been down this path?

I've painted many, many computer monitors.  I just use the cheapie paint.  Since it's not getting any wear, it lasts a very long time.

In fact, I painted my current monitor back in '97, and it has no wear at all.  Lot of dust, no wear.

That Krylon Fusion paint works GREAT for what you're looking to do.

One thing - make sure you clean the plastic off really well before painting, that's what usually helps it to flake off, painting over crap so it doesn't adhere real well.

When painting plastic, I always went and bought a bottle of cheap alcohol (from the drug store, not the liquor store  :P ) and some paper towels, and wipe down everything VERY well with it.  You bought the whole bottle, might as well use the whole thing!  Obviously concentrate on the areas that will be seen, and not nearly as much as the rest.

Let it dry.  Paint away.  Like Peale said, cheap paint works just fine, but since Krylon came out with the stuff, I've used it, and it just seems "tougher"....I'm not as afraid to scratch it, and it seems like it doesn't sit on top of the plastic like regular stuff does.
