Hey everyone
I just finished my first mame arcade cab 2 weeks ago...
i have a 21inch Panasonic SDTV usin s-vid in it...
i hate it...the picture is blury, it hurts my eyes and it gives me headaches...
i've come to the decision to buy an arcade monitor ;)
i'm on a very tight buget.....but i can't live with this tv display...
i can't afford a wells gardner d9200 or a benson imperial multisync monitor along with a ArcadeVGA card.....whitch i would love to have...
so my only option is to buy a refurbed wells gardner u3100 19inch high res monitor (31khz)
My question is will i be able to run all the cga(15khz) and ega(25khz) arcade games on the u3100 with my ati readon 9100 vid card...oh and windows?
if so how would they look?
THX....i have to say this site rules :) :) :)

hey seibu,
your post really helped alot.....i didn't think a vga arcade monitor looked the same as a pc monitor.....
i phoned my local arcade dealer today and they have a warehouse of old used arcade monitors, all cga
the guy said they are old...some 20 years old....and some haved been powered on in years...he said they are all mostly 19inch....some bigger
he told me i could come down and take a look and power a few on to see what one i want....he told me he will start at 50 bucks (canadian) for the 19inch monitors.
i think one of these used ones will suit me well.....what do u guys think?
anyway here my question...how should i test them? and what should i look for?
and also will the cga monitors work for ega games such as mortal kombat?
-
If you can lean heavily toward WG G07 monitors. They're still in use today, with a lot of replacement parts available.
-
The funny thing about these 31Khz "Arcade" monitors is that they're really just PC monitors without a case.
NO.

I used a u3100 in a cocktail and ran everything stretched to 800x600. It looked good and authentic. I'm sure you could get better results in advmame by using resolutions perhaps 2x original. This would eliminate any "stretching" and the blurriness it can cause. In my opinion the vector games looked good too (Not quite as good as a real computer monitor though of course)
-
hmm....that u3100 is lookin mighty good now....even with out the arcadevga vid card...
but in the time being i will be pickin up a used cga arcade monitor form my arcade dealer....
where i'm using a ati readon 9100 video card and using windows xp...
will regular windows mame or mame32run the games on the cga monitor? if so what games (cga, ega, vga) and will it havea decent picture in windows?
i will be hacking an old pc monitors video cabe to hook up the cga arcade monitor to my video card...
questions questions questions :)

you will need to use either advmame or something like powerstrip to get a signal to a cga monitor without using an arcadevga

i went to my arcade dealer after....i forgot to phone him in advance so he didn't have any testing done on the monitors there....
anyway i picked one on the shelf to test...it was a 19inch monitor that was made in 1981 lol......the guy never pluged it into a machine....he ust pluged it into the walloutlet to power it...
when it came on it had a blue screen.....
we told me itz suspost to have a grey screen when u turn it on...
we was moving knobs in the back and the blue screen went a little redish...but it was still mostly blue
.......he told me this one might need to capasitors.....
and plus then it was off....i could see the score of a game on the monitor slightly....
he told me i could have it for 20bucks......is this monitor any good?
does it have all the colors?...is it worth puttin in my mame machine?
i'm going ack there to look at some other monitors next week
-
I'd say that if he plugged it right into the wall, without an isolation transformer, it's not worth squat.

Isn't the G07 an electrohome?
Good luck finding a G07 with little to no burn.
-
I actually have a beautiful G07 with almost no burn at all! I couldn't get it to sync with a JPAC, so I ended up sdticking it in my SSFII cabinet. Kind of a waste to hide it behind that smoked plexi though....
-
An absolute incredible WASTE!
You had best give it to me. My Tapper has horrid burn on the G07.
;D

I'd just go PC monitor.
You can just hook it up and no problems. I love the one I have, and you can find them pretty cheap around at shows and in sales.
The only drawback is that some of them have such a large box it's hard to fit them into the cabs.
