Title: Why Frontends require upgrading ?
Post by: KHAN on November 18, 2004, 04:58:01 pm
When any emulator comes with a new version it already enhance
to play games.
why frontends require an upgrade ?
i know it is very essencial to maintain a relation between
frontend and emulator, but frontend should only comes with
a bugfix there is no need to develop a criteria of new versions.
all new versions of frontends shows newer techniques and become
more compecated than the previous one...
why don't frontends completed thier journey to be able as a full and
final version ?

The main reason for Frontends to upgrade is to add new features.

Or like recently when MAME stopped supporting -listinfo (used by most frontends to generate the list of games). All front ends had to be upgraded in order to work with the MAME.

Not sure you will ever have a final version of any software product. User always want new features (and bug fixes). As soon as a front end adds mp3 support users start asking for ogg, add avi support and users are asking for .mov

It never ends..

This is a joke, right.

They don't "require" upgrading, after the first version it's bug fixes, streamlining (M$ never heard of that),  and changes for it to run on new OS Software (sometimes).

I guess they could just make one version, but why wouldn't you want to download a faster, better one? You want them to sit down for years after making it to figure out what they could do better, then release it? I guess I don't understand?

Yeah baby the new Mamewah rocks, trackball in menu, much speedier searching, more use of hidden files eg .ini files rather than a cluttered main menu. It's almost like a whole new front end.

Most of us try to have backwards compatibility...for example with 3darcade it has been a long long time, i cant even remember, since you were required to change cfg files.

But that is because the core has never been rewritten and only extended upon. The new mamewah was almost a complete rewrite and streamlining and then its not really doable.

Didn't some bloke say something like 'movies are never completed, they are wrapped up due to time or money constraints'. (I heard George Lucas quote it anyway...)

Same thing, except money isn't as crucial.

I have not updated ArcadeFX in two year.  Mainly becase I felt it had all the features I wanted for my arcade. That was why I built it in the first place.  I am realeasing  a new version soon but that is only because I have a freature of two I want to add.

New features = new version.

You know, you could pop in to say hi once in a while.... no need to wait until you do an update.  ;)
