anyone know what format dvdr media that xbox is capable of reading?
should i get dvd-r or dvd+r media
it is for making backups of my games (i got my xbox modchipped)

I would get DVD-R, but it really depends on the DVD drive in yur XBOX. IF you have a Thompson drive then you'll have problems with certain brands, where as the Samsung ones will accept more types and brands.
The is a list on Xbox-Scene.com that should list compatibility

if your dvd burner can set Booktype settings, DVD+R is probably the best bet since you can make them look like they are a DVD-ROM as opposed to a DVD+R.
Otherwise, grab a few of each type from good brands (Taiyo Yuden, Ritek/RiData, etc) and see what works in your box. Then just get whatever is on sale :)
My samsung reads pretty much everything so I just get whatever Ritek discs are on sale at the time.

i use DVD-R without a problem.

Better get a friend to test burning you some games on both formats, if you have a Thompson drive. My v1.0 xbox w/Thompson won't read crap (not even DVD-R)...so you should make sure before making an investment in a drive.

It totally depends what drive you have. There are three different drives that MS has used: a Phillips, a Samsung and a Thompson. Anyway you can tell by looking at your drive tray and comparing it with the pictures here. (http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=17216) There's probably loads of other useful information in the thread that link jumps you to. I've never read it.
For what it's worth, I have a Samsung drive and it reads Optodisc 8x DVD+R (inkjet printables) like a champ. These are really inexpensive. I just got a spindle of 100 discs for $34 at www.supermediastore.com.
