Average size of monitor now days for general mame cabinets is 27"
Older games pre-90's used 19" on average I believe

I think most original cabs didn't use more than a 19 inch.  What type of monitor you use really depends on your goal.  Do you plan to play pc games on it as well?  Do you want to run consoles on it, or just emulators?  Do you want the "arcade perfect" experience.  My preference for monitors runs like so:  Multi-sync arcade monitor, standard arcade monitor, standard TV with S-video, computer monitor.  That is just my opinion though.  An arcade monitor is going to cost the most, so that is a consideration for most people.  Tvs are cheap because a lot of people have one lying around somewhere, ditto for computer monitors.

My personaly preference is computer monitor.  Looks pretty good even with the too high of a resolution and is the only option in my opinion for running vector games.

Average size = Big as you can fit.
The type = whatever you can get your hands on.  There's an old thread around that shows the quality diffences between arcade monitor/computer/TV.  It's probably in the FAQ or you can try searching for it.  I think Oscar posted the pics.  (I think they're up on his website too.)

i use a 21 inch pc monitor, it works for me and everything looks fine...

i'm aquiring what i need to hook my dreamcast up to it as well, i'm gonna try playing gun games on it, hopefully it's not too small for that, the dreamcast guns work with a vga box, so i've seen on this site, can anyone confirm that?
