Should I go with the cheap 4"speakers from Happs that have a grill on them and cut a big speaker hole to put them through, or should I drill small holes for a speaker "region" that the the speakers (better/bigger speakers) sit on top of in the upper part of the cabinet?
like one big hole or

If so does anyone have pics or know of what would be the traditional style/shape?

You can't do arcade speakers wrong.
I own original games that.
Have slots cut out in the wood over the speaker.
Have cloth mesh grills.
Have metal grills that are round like the speaker.
Have metal grills that go wall to wall in the speaker area.
Have an internal speaker with no outlet whatsoever.
Point the speaker out of the top of the cabinet.
Speaker on the floor of the cab with the grill pointed down towards the floor (common in cocktails).
Whatever you do will be fine. Even the games with the speaker inside sound just great.

Hmm ok
Then maybe a better question for my situation would be, what were dedicated Mortal Kombat/Midway cabinets like? Nba Jam, Killer Instinct etc are examples

Plastic grill over the monitor IIRC.

Ok yah I've seen those
Wasn't sure if they were added later or not
what's IIRC stand for?
Well i guess this ends up being a matter of opinion
what do you people think looks better?
drilled grill or actual speaker grill

I went with 4" shielded speakers from happs and round black speaker grills mounted under the marquee area in my somewhat modifiied Lusid design cab.
