What is the best Vertical shooter?
I've found a new favorite. Blast Off (Japan) by Namco. Very Very Cool.
Any other opinions(Besides Galaga)?

A few of my all time favs
Galaxian
Juno First
Star Force
Scramble

I'm sure this will not be popular with all the purists around here, but I think my favorite is Ikaruga. You can get it for either the Dreamcast or the Gamecube.

why do you do this to every topic you've started on this forum? ****************
your posts are no more important than anyone elses', k thnx?

Raystorm and Ikaruga if we're counting console vertical shooters. Einhander on the psx is horizontal but deserves a mention. From the arcade, I've always loved the gradius series but vertical wise terra cresta is an old favourite.

aska a shmup purist and they'll say Radiant Silvergun..
i personally love Dangun feveron, Dragon Blaze,Gunbird 2,Hotdog Storm.
-
All the 19xx series. I quite like Ghost Pilots (NeoGeo) too. Don Pachi, Do Don Pachi, ESP R.a.d.e (or something like that).
I like loads of these, but I can never remember the names (not even time playing is my excuse...)
-
You're all heathens for not mentioning Xevious yet! ;)
-
As were previously mentioned ESP and Gunbird 2 Rock.
I always liked Sky Soldiers, too.
-
Ikaruga
-
TOK is right
Xevious3D is GREAT! But I need to use Zinc to get the full resolution running and FSAA!
-
Console favs: Ikaruga, Psyvariar 2, Shikigami No Shiro 2
Mame favs: Guwange, ESP Ra. De.

Hotdog Storm? LOL, sorry but I get the most hilarious visual of it raining down oscar mayers from that name. ;D
-
1943: The Battle of Midway. The best.
I also love Raiden, Twin Cobra, Twin Eagle. Sky Shark... too many good ones to remember.
Also every other level on Life Force. 8)

Final Star Force

Does Zinc run this with sound?
It plays pretty good in MAME, but without sound (unless version after .84 added it).
-
Sonic Wings 3 is pretty cool and a little unique, its pretty frickin hard too..

I do it to bring attention to my posts. It obviously works a little too well if it actually compels a tool like you to take time out of his day to comment on it.
get a life geek.
Also, have any of you played Blast Off on MAME? It is REALLY cool how it changes perspectives.

hey i dont name em i just play em :P

I believe ZINc 1.0 plays Xevious 3D/G with sound.
-
Thunderforce II - best shooter ever - imop. (tho not really vertical. But - Its got horizontal and top view missions)
On sega genesis,.. in mame as megaplay (but not sure if working well in mame) Also, was originally developed on sharp's x68000 computer (also known as fm-towns)... with more levels, better gfx details and sounds, much harder as well.
Top view parts are a bit bland compared to the side
scolling levels... which are jaw droppingly cool (even better the higher you get!) Sweet fast smooth play and lots of weapons (seven total capacity!). Great synth tunes and sounds.
Better than the sequals in many ways.
Very 'replayable' as well.

hehe. thats cos xevious blows! although i do concede that back in the day i thought it was pretty cool. and it was pretty advanced at the time.
now, bells & whistles. why has no one mentioned THAT?
edit: just checked out aerofighters. excellent game. i played that a bit back in its day. one of the games mentioned here must be a clone of it or something because i was checking out some of the above titles when i came across aerofighters...

Xevious is not a good game, it was just a different game that added some new ideas. Many other games went on and used those ideas very effectively.
Xevious is also one of the LEAST collectable classic atari games, along with Fast Freddie and Arabian.

herers all the vertical shooters in my favorites list from emuloader.
cant go wrong with any of these..

A few of my all time favs
Galaxian

Scramble
Scramble would be a horizontal shooter.
My list would be as follows:
Galaga
Juno First
Galaxian
Phoenix
Moon Cresta
1942
Space invaders
Xevious
Exerion
Can't believe no one mentioned these two:
Centipede
Missile Command

Uh-oh. Here come the clouds. One of you heathens is about to get struck by lightning if you don't take it back! :)
Fast Freddie and Arabian stink, but anyone who likes Kangaroo better than Xevious better quit watching Queer Eye For the Straight Guy!

Xevious is not a good game
I've always thought Xevious was under-rated. With it's buried targets and hidden extra men, it was quite a challenge to find everything while still hitting 100% of the targets.
I think it had a good look and feel to it. It is one of my favoties behind Galaga.

Actually technically Scramble is a vertical shooter that scrolls horizontally. The monitor is vertical that's why I included it in my list.
-
just out of curiousity, why was my post deleted?
PM me.
thx

Okay, I was thinking shooting up the screen not monitor orientation which would rule out my selection of Missile Command. :P
-
I'm with Minwah. I agree completely with that list.

just had a serious look at exerion. it rocks!! i love the kinda vague, inertial feel of it (reminds me of the first time i flew a plane). and the limited number of bullets feature is great. cool how you can 'save up' bullets by using the slower secondary gun.
