Hi there, long time listener, first time caller.
I have Mamawah, Mamepp 0.81 and GensFE on my cab-in-progress.
I have not managed to get Mamewah to give me a list of anything other than 8 character filenames as "Rom folder only" seems to be the only method that actually generates a game list at all. I guess there's something with Mame I need to do to get pretty names but I haven't found out what yet. Can anyone shed some light?
I also have a load of Sega games on there, (most of which I don't know what they are, cos of the 8.3 filenames and many I am sure I will want to delete.)
Now I know GensFE can't generate anything that Mamewah can use, but I did find a piece of software called Gensuite that generates a game list text file with readable names and other info, and Gensuite allows you to customise the format of this list.
I figured therefore that there must be some way to create a game list file in the exact format that Mamewah 's native gamelist file is saved in. Guessing the format hasn't worked yet however.
So what I want to know is, what are the specs of this list text file, so I can just build my own, and the next time I start Mamewah I'll have a proper Sega games list? Or failing that is there some other text file format I can generate that Mamewah can import?

I assume you're using the latest version of MAMEWAH, 1.52?
Since you're using an older version of MAME you need to set your list_generation_method to rom_folder_vs_listinfo. Once you do that, configure your rom_path and emulator_executable you should be all set. If you have problems generating your list, doublecheck the rom_path and emulator_executable.

Normally people learn to use the GoodTools + GoodWindows (http://www.zophar.net/utilities/goodutil.html) to fix their non-MAME ROMs. You want to download GoodGens, since you're dealing with Genesis ROMs (I assume).
This utility will handle renaming your ROMs so you will know what the heck they are, then you can go and delete to your hearts content.
The side benefit of renaming the ROMs to a human-friendly format is MAMEWAH will be able to generate your Sega gamelist in a friendly format with the built-in list_generation_method of rom_folder.

I'm using 0.97. I spent weeks getting it all set up as I wanted it, and trying to get the same setup with a completely different file format was just such a dispiriting task that I uninstalled 1.52 and went back to 0.97
Anyway, using Listinfo versus Rom folder only gives me an empty game list.
I will try renaming some roms with Goodgen - I had assumed that you could not use long filenames with spaces with Gens because they would interfere with the command line. I shall try it and see.
When Mamewah Setup can work with 1.52 I'll upgrade. I am of the opinion that editing text files to set up a program's preferences is uncivilised, just like command line interfaces and 8.3 filenames :D

Oh, check out this (http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=27265) thread.
Open up a command prompt. C'mon, don't be afraid. You'll like it, I promise!

Ha ha, I don't think I will ;) I grew up programming on DOS boxes, in Clipper and Dbase3. I have *so* had my fill of command lines!!
Anyway, cheers for the help. I shall investigate
