Title: talem is attempting to rip someone off
Post by: paigeoliver on November 10, 2004, 11:32:11 am
It saddens me to say this, but once again byoac member talem has been caught trying to rip someone off.

He listed the Tekken control panel and board advertised in this thread on ebay.

http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=24330

and here on rgvac

groups.google.com link (http://groups.google.com/groups?q=talem+arcade&hl=en&lr=&selm=804db889.0406151229.295533eb%40posting.google.com&rnum=7)

Here was the ebay listing.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=6128278214&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT

He is attempting to extort $80 for shipping from the winner claiming that the control panel weighs more than two monitors, and has to ship in two boxes.

Read about this here.

KLOV Forums Link (http://forums.webmagic.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB3&Number=182979&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1)

Also note talem's ebay feedback as well, roughly half of his sales have gone bad.

That panel is a converted smashtv panel. I have one myself, and it cost me $12 to ship when I bought it, not $80.

Sorry, we aren't going to stand for this around here.

Also note that he previously tried to extort a free 3 hour round trip delivery out of another seller, and then reversed the paypal charges on the seller.

http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=6;action=display;threadid=20686;start=0

Note he ended this one with a lie about a "friend" who lives close by buying the game and finding out it is broken. Which of course doesn't make any sense in about 3 different ways.

Wow, this guy lives like 15 minutes from me (in the next town).  I should have bought it and then when he asked for $85 shipping, just show up on his doorstep asking for the panel with $12 in hand  ;D.

Well, it is a ripoff, but he did say email for shipping charges first.  Even if it was spelled wrong.    ::)

Before I paid $80 shipping, I'd take a negative or whatever he could dish out.

Respectfully, this is why we should consider having a dispute section where bad deals can be settled and cases can be made for banning members for ripping people off.
Disputes are posted, the person who is disputed against is informed of the dispute and given a chance to respond, possible solutions are proposed and members can then get help from the moderators in resolving the dispute.  People who are found to be ripping other members off are banned from the board, period.  This would also give some legitimacy to the concept of good/bad traders.  Good traders could have a reference section for good completed deals where members can post and check references before buying, and bad/banned traders resulting from unsettled disputes are listed as such by the moderators in another section.  Deals go bad for numerous reasons and most of the legit members will be open to resolutions.  I belong to another board where this concept is used and we have solved most disputes and weeded out many thieves.  I can get together further details about how this works if anyone else is interested.  Just an idea for consideration.

Man this guy has really sprouted a nice reputation around here.  I know this is off topic but I always wondered is he really legally blind and had all those eye surgerys.  I remember feeling sorry for him when he posted that surgery thread.  Anyways, I was just curious.

I won't refute anyone's claims here, but I checked this guy's feedback and I only see 2 negatives out of 2 pages worth of feedback. How is this "half of his sales"???

Title: Re:talem is attempting to rip someone off
Post by: Raleigh on November 10, 2004, 04:00:46 pm
If you look at his feedback from buyers (for the items he sold) he has 2 negatives out of 8, plus one of the possitives is actually a negative comment.  So 3/8 bad responses is about "half of his sales".

AHHHHHH! Ebay really should seperate the buyer/seller feedback. I ALWAYS forget to check for that.

Okay... I just found something hilarious. If you check his, "From Buyers" feedback and click on the rating feedback for brookelyn9485 (10) you can read Talem's retalitory negative. He states the following in his feedback:

"never sold him anything and yet leaves bad feedback, Teriiable BUYer BEWARE!!!!"

Holy &$!# that's hilarious! I'll explain just in case there are people who don't ebay - with the ebay rules you can't leave arbitrary feedback. You HAVE to win or complete the sale of an auction in order to leave those remarks. His denial is hilarious and a definitive red flag. What a putz!

Already tried that offer (on the klov board):

Iam sorry but i do not commute to san jose, and for all the negative posts in the BYOAC forum and your guys attitudes have really not want me to deal with you. So sorry i will not deal with you on that offer.

Hmm....

He is over on the klov board now.

Trying to tell an entire forum of experienced collectors who have collectively been doing this for DECADES that he knows better than us about what this control panel costs to ship.

Despite the fact that I HAVE the SAME PANEL, and it was $12.00 shipping when I bought it.

No..I offered to meet if he did indeed commute to SJ. So, he's not quite off that rocker yet.

Gilroy is just far enough for me not to go flat out pick it up for the guy. Maybe if I knew the buyer personally, it would be a different story.

That is a converted SmashTV panel. I have one at home. Wood, plexi, buttons, big heavy metal gun holsters.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=13718&item=6109365222

And oops, my memory was off, they actually charged $12.99 to ship it.

How you like that talem!

i didn't read through all the off-site posts so not sure if it was mentioned there or not, but i'm pretty sure it is against ebay rules to charge greatly inflated shipping prices.

yet alot of people do it.

I just paid $8 shipping on two drill bits.  The package was marked $0.49 shipping, even if you add $1 for the package, that is still a $6.50 markup on shipping.
Title: Re:talem is attempting to rip someone off
Post by: SirPeale on November 12, 2004, 11:59:38 am
I think it depends on the degree of markup.

$8.00 to ship a couple of drill bits, it may be a little high, but not *totally* out of line.

$85 to ship a control panel?  $30 I'd believe, but not $85.

Along the same vein: why do people charge "pickup fees" on ebay? I am saving you having to go down to the post office and your gonna charge me a fee. Dude, wtf!?!

Yes, those are what really piss me off.  There was a local place selling computer monitors and it stated that there was a pick up fee that would not exceed 50% of shipping.  Well I checked shipping and it was like $80, so I emailed the seller and asked what the exact fee would be and he stated that it would be 50% of shipping.  There is no way I am going to pay someone $40 to pick up something, what a joke.  I am always glad if someone wants to pick something up as it will save me the hastle of shipping.  I just stay away from auctions that don't state their shipping costs or charge mysterious pick up fees.
Title: Re:talem is attempting to rip someone off
Post by: paigeoliver on November 12, 2004, 03:40:55 pm
A $40 pickup fee is because they are trying to make up the $40 handling charge they had built into that $80 shipping total.

I like to try and buy local items and then pick them up, it is the best way to get $5 and $10 15" monitors.

If they say they can't be home, or can't meet you or whatever then just pay with paypal and ask them to sit it out on the porch for you to pick up. Most people wary or unwilling to allow pickup of a cheap item normally will do this.
