I'm updating from .78 to .88 with each rom set upgrade, mame windows command line program, and using clrmamepro for .88.
After playing with a couple things, I wanted to make sure it was actually WORKING before I set clrmamepro loose on the whole system (which takes a while) I loaded Dig dug. Took probably 10-20 seconds (before was 3-4 seconds)
Loaded Pengo and it took about 20-30 seconds (3-4 seconds before)
I could be WAY OFF on those times, but that's sure as hell what it felt like. I tried using the pentium pro optimize as well and that didn't help much (if any)
Using a P3 - 800mhz with around 512mb SDRAM - windows XP

I'll give that a try, my mame.ini file didn't change though, and I didn't have them disabled before. (Clrmamepro is running now, so it'll be awhile. I'm overhauling my romset.)

It will speed things up. skip_validitychecks was only added in v0.88, so do a 'mame -cc' for it to show up.

Ahh, I added the line in the mame.ini file and it seems to be doing a lot better now, still seems a BIT slower, but not much. Thanx!

you should rename your old mame.ini to something else then do mame -cc for each release of mame. That way you won't miss out on any extra options which may have been added since the last release.

Actually, just do a mame -cc. It will add int he new commands if there are any.

...and keep your old settings the way they were.
