hi guys,
i've got some confusion with the neo geo layout.
it seems that with a neo geo layout you would have the bottom three buttons be 234 with 1 being the 7th button, and the top three buttons would be 567. correct?
if this is correct, wouldn't you have to remap the buttons for all games other than neo geo? and if this isn't the layout, then wouldn't you have to map all the neo geo games?
i'd love to use the layout for my cp, but i don't want a bunch of extra work just to have it since i've got alot of work to do on my arcade apart from this. i searched the forum, but i just got references and no explanations, hope someone can clear up this confusion for me. thanks

When I did mine, I set it up as
1 2 3 4
4 5 6
so I have the row of four across the top for Neo Geo games, and a standard Capcom layout otherwise... Never have to remap anything.
-
Try this:
x 1 2 3
x 4 5 6
1
ABCD=1456
Or:
X 1 2 3
x 4 5 6
7
ABCD=7456
This way, you don't have to re-map all of your non NeoGeo games. The only real difference between these two is if you want to give up an extra encoder input for each player. I would recommend using the 7th input for ease of setup and MK3 if you can, because then you can do this:
xxx HP BL HK
xxx LP BL LK
Run

Not being an arcade junkie.... and not being into fighter games as such.... I always thought that the Neo-Geo layout consisted of 7 independant buttons. Is that not the case? Is one of those buttons duplicated?

I may just be ignorant, but I'm under impression that all Neo Geo games use four or less buttons... Certainly all the ones I've ever played do.

he doesn't mean the actual neo geo button layout as seen on the real arcade machine, he means the layout us mamers have created and lovingly called the neo geo button layout. thanks guys for all the help, but it seems that you still have to map buttons out no matter the approach unless you go with the first post-solution...
classic neo geo layout:
ooo
ooo
o
grueinthebox solution aka neo neo geo layout: (neo = new)
oooo
ooo

Another good reason to use separate inputs is in case you are doing console emulators. I don't do them much, but I know Snes has 6 buttons, select and start which means you'd need 8 total, and the standard Capcom layout only has 7 (counting start button).

Good point, but I would recommend getting a <game console> to USB adapter if you plan on doing a lot of console stuff. Either that, or pick up one of these cheapo 5 dollar Gravis usb gamepads that are setup like a PS2 controller.

ok- bumping this thread with a quick question...
On the '7th button' which keys do I map it to on the IPacc/Keyboard for each player 1/2? I'm trying to program my IPac2 and need to know which keys to program that button to. So, which kay on the keyboard is it for the 7th button on each player, 1 & 2?
Thanks!

Yeah, the "Neo Geo" button is almost totally a fighter thing. It works real nice for MK3 as well, and actually makes for a useful Defender button too!

Generally, yes but if you use ctrlr.ini files (ctlr.cfg file on the later MAME's) you can set up a neogeo.ini file one time and all your neogeo games will use that mapping.

I'm doing the same thing
yeah you gotta remap it for one or the other
mostly just for fighting games though

This is my dynamo neogeo control panel. It originally had the basic setup...then i drilled the holes where the black buttons are.

hmmm.... that's an interesting variation I had never considered... Throw that one on the pile with Darkstalker's layout summary. It might be nice to custom map the 7 button for games that only have a single button

I just think mine is super sweet, because I can go straight from neogeo style control settings to capcom style fighters with the 6 button layout. :D
Look here for the original neogeo layout. 1 to the side, 3 on top. I belive this is a great alt.
