Title: Is this a good deal for a Sega Astro City Cabinet?
Post by: killbill on November 04, 2004, 09:31:35 pm
Hi,

I've found a guy somewhat locally who will sell me a Sega Astro City Cabinet with a 29" monitor.

This cabinet comes with 2 joysticks, 6 button each player, power supply, Jamma harness, kick harness, coin selector, and door keys. the monitor condition is good.

The lowest he'll go is $375.00

Is this a really good deal?  I figure I could slap a PC in there with a JPAC and an Arcade VGA card and be ready to go.

Any input is appreciated.
Thanks.

Thats a great deal. Buy it right now.

That is around what the importers pay for the things used, but WiTHOUT the shipping costs.

How tall small must you be to reach those controls comfortablly?   Looks awfully low to the ground.  Perhaps that was made to play while lying down on the floor? :P

Assuming it's of similar dimensions to my Super Neo 29, I'm 6' with long legs and I can play comfortably sitting on a standard metal folding chair.

Oh, and it's a great deal on the cabinet.

Dude, that's a good deal, I'd get it.   The astro is a good standard japanese cab.  Some of the older Neo's I've seen look fugly.  I recenetly aquired a 29" Namco Blue Exceleena (just like MadSmurf's if anyone remembers), and love it!  I'll have to post pics as soon as I'm done cleaning it up.

Sounds like a very good price for a Jamma cab with a 29 inch monitor.

Hold on, isn't that the cab another member of this board just got? I bet that's his!  ;D He was complaining it was smaller than he expected!

that was me, i got an egret,a slightly different cb but yea, they are small..short to be precise..
so few people have pics of those cabs with anyone in front of them.im sure if they did ,most would run..
my control panel sits a mere 24 inches off the floor.and im sure this cab is no different.

I think you're thinking of the guy in the Project Announcements forum who bought a Neo 25 thinking it was a 29" cabinet...  Can't remember who it was, and I'm too lazy to check right now.  :p

EDIT: Made my way over there...  Here it was: http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=10;action=display;threadid=26903

Even when you KNOW how small they are, they are still smaller than you expect once they are in front of your eyes.

Most people here know that they are sitdown cabs, but the fact is they really are deceivingly small.  I remember thinking "O, 29inch monitor, I bet that is pretty large" etc etc, but these cabs really are small.

No one is expecting a big cab out of these, it's just surprising how small they really are.

Maybe people are assuming that the japanease are taller when they see pictures of them playing. lol

Seems a great deal for the price, considering there isn't any major screen burn on the monitor.

Layout of the buttons is a bit oddly angled, well compared to mine anyway.  More importantly though, are the joysticks and button in good condition?

As for size, I'm nearly 6'2, large build and totally love this cab the way it is.  Fold out chairs are perfect for use with these cabinets.  Better than standing at the bigger cabinet IMO.

As for being ugly, well, I think thats a bit harsh.  I've only had compliments from friends who have seen the cabinet first hand.

I have a big toolchest on wheels that I use for a bench. It is the perfect height, and it allows me to keep easy access to all my game fixin tools.

I've decided not to buy the 29" Sega Astro City cab.  I am in Los Angeles.  If anyone wants the guy's contact number, let me know.

And as for the guy mid thread who said, "What kind of moron expects for sit down cabs to be bigger?"  First off, that's a lame thing to say.

Secondly, I was more referring to the control panel width on the 25" Candy.  You see photos on Ebay, and there is no perspective.  The distance from P1 joystick to P2 joystick on the control panel makes two player play very close quarters; ,like two inches closer than on the X-Arcade's panel   :o

Whether it's a sitdown cab or not, it should be at least comfortable for 2 players to play on.  That was my point.

i know this is an old thread, but wow... i thought most folks on this board knew about candy cabs. $375 for an astro is an OUTRAGEOUS deal. and most machines in the far east ARE sitdown, so that's why they're so small. hell, if it was still available, i'd drive to pick it up for $500

needless to say, it's the best one to have in the house... especially if you live in an apartment (like i do). i have a super neo 29, and i'm 6' 1", 180lbs... and i play 2 players all the time with company sometimes twice my size with NO space problem.

this wanted to comment on this old, funny convo :)
