What is your 2 favorite original Arcade games of all times?
I want to limit to ONLY 2 without an extra 2 or 3 honorable mentions.
I'm sure this has been done before but I'm new here and I would like to start using a front-end when I finish my cabinet. I have my favorites list but I would like to include your favorites too.
Also what is the most visitor-frendly front end (using Mame and pin-mame)
My 2 are:
Robotron
Stargate
(I suck at both, 3rd level max)
-
Crazy Climber
Bosconian
Most of the "good" front-ends are very easy to use--once you get them set up properly.
I am personally using MAMEWAH, but there are several others that are similar in features, and a few that even have some more advanced features I didn't need for my purposes.
-
Metal Slug 2 & R-type
"good" front ends would be:
* Game launcher
http://www.dribin.org/dave/game_launcher/
* Kymaera
http://www.pacmanfan.com/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/kymaera/
-
Yeah, I don't think I will need advanced features either. I just want the one my mom will be able to use. Yes my mom is looking foward to my cab also. One day when I was about 12, me and my mom dropped $250 of her dollars in the arcade in about 4 hours. (yes we both suck at games)
-
Strider & Shinobi... at least, right now.
As for the FE, I like MAMEwah and Dragon King, since they're the only ones I've really used.
And to drop $250 in four hours? You're not just whistlin' dixie!
-

Ok if I had to play only 2 games for the rest of my life I guess they would be

Mainly because no matter how good I got I would never "finish" a game.
-
Street Fighter 2
Galaga
-
Mortal Kombat 3.
Street Fighter games.
-
Wow - Im reallt amazed that Spy Hunter hasnt been posted more as a top game.
Maybe people didnt get to play it in the arcades?
Maybe do not have a wheel and pedal set + 2way shifter to
play it with...
The game gets pretty hard after a few minutes into play. Lots of fast action... lots of weapons in you disposal if you can keep alive.
Heres an interesting tip I found when trying to play with my partially working machine - (pedal is being rebuilt - so i had to just turn the gas pot up to a decent speed and leave it there - no slowing down!)
You can kill the Switchblade cars with your guns if they are in front of you... but if you do not have Oil, or Smoke, what can you do to kill them ?
Well, you know that if their blades arnt out - you can ram them hard on the sides to run them off the road... but...
If blades are out: If you time it just right, as they creep up behind you - and try to pass you... ram just the very front part of thier car. If you do it correctly, thier blades will not harm you as you are too far forward - but - thier car will fly! : ) Make sure you are close enough to the side of the road so that they do not come back for more ; )
----
To bump cars- make sure you are the one who bumps first... else you may be flying off the road. Also, make sure that you really slam the wheel fast and hard twords them... else the bump will nt be strong enough to push them off the road. The slam has to be so hard - that it makes you wonder if you arnt going to break the wheel : ) heh
Spyhunters wheel has heavy duty rubber stoppers - that hold up to extreme abuse without flinching. Also, they are dual trigger grips - simular to disc of tron sticks - but mounted to the wheel. This allows easy steering and quick control of 4 weapons at one time:
Machine Guns: standard. do not run out
Oil: create slicks to make cars wipeout
Smoke Screen: wipeout huge area of cars.
Missiles - Take the helicopter out of the sky.
Special things...
There is small path in the road that you can go to once in a while - it looks like a house at the end of it. Thats the Boathouse... where you actually change into a boat!
Your oil changes into a flaming path of oil on the water!
Missiles and smoke still operate the same.
The enemies drop explosive drums into the water.. hard to dodge as control in the water is a bit slower.
There are exits to shore every so often. The boat stage is wicked hard - so try to exit asap! : )
There is an Icy road stage... where the control is slowed as well.
--------
to stay alive long... you need to be in high gear, but, travel at low speeds in that gear. If you really punch it - you will end up crashing too easily. However... if you see an impending accident about to happen... you can let off the gas quickly, and sometimes you will slow down low gear speeds - thus just bouncing off a pedestrian car rather than exploding from crashing into it.
btw - if you didnt know... you have to drive into the large red 'weapons van' to pick up a new weapon. If you look on top of the weapons van, you will see a small picture of the weaon that you are about to get. If you alreay have that weapon - it will refill it, as they do run out with several uses.
Oil: about 10 small slicks (let off the button quicker for smaller slicks - too small and wont be effective tho)
Smoke: About 3 blast if memmory serves me right.
Missiles - 3 missiles
----------
To take the helicopter out - just make sure that you are vertically aligned with it before releaseing missiles. Be carefull of his bombs that will create nasty holes in the road - or your car! : )
-
Discs of Tron
Outrun
honorable mention: Spy Hunter ;)
-
720 and dragons lair...DAMN YOU FOR ONLY LETTING ME PICK TWO!!!
honorable mention Robotron!!!
-
I hated Spy Hunter cuz I never lasted more than about 10 seconds!
-
Ahh, but ya gota luv a game that whoops your --I'm attempting to get by the auto-censor and should be beaten after I re-read the rules-- : )
Now that theres some tips up there, give it another go. Takes about an hour to get the hang of things... then you keep getting better from there.
The main thing about Spyhunter... is to make sure to use a pot based wheel and pedal set. With any other type of control setup... you wont have fast enough reaction time nor the perfect control needed for this insane game.
You can get away without a 2way hi-low shifter - by mapping a button for it. However... it does have to be an easy to reach one.
A few more tips:
* Do not shoot your machine guns while driving. Only use them sparingly when baddies are in aim. Otherwise, you will shoot pedestrians... and run into thier wreckage. You also need to be ready to slow and dodge the wreckages of the baddies as you shoot them. Shoot wisely and carefully.
* Do not feel the need to go too fast. Once you get to the end of your clock... drive in high gear, but at a slow speed... else you risk wreckage.
* Use pedestrians as shields. As baddies creep from behind, you can shoot a pedestrian and quickly dodge it, and the baddies will have to take evasive action to avoid damage - leaving you some breathing room.
* As the helicopter approaches... stay in one place for a few seconds till the copter is about to drop a bomb... then dodge the bomb at the last second. Make sure to account for the road ahead... so that you can dodge into the road - instead of running off the road to dodge it.
* Executioner will miss you unless you move too slow. If he is moving... then you have to bump him off the road before he sticks the gun out.
* Practice bumping for like an hour. Its an essential skill for going far in a game.
* You do not need to press weapons van to 'call' it. It dosnt do a thing.. except start a game. Also it used to flash to let you know it was comming up. Slow down and let it catch up to you... let it ahead of you about 2 cars distance, then slam into high gear to enter it.
* Be very carefull after getting dropped off from the van. Enter with light steering and speed... as if you try to cross too deep into the road by steering hard, you may get ran into by a passing car.
* Theres a trick: After getting dropped off by the van, keep the wheel all the way over twords the sceen edge you are closest to... and punch it. You will be invincible, rolling thru and over everything... however.. it will crash the game at some point if you do it too long. Not sure it works after timer runs out either.
* When dropping oil... wait till they are close as you might be able to kill more than one car with the slick. Wait till the enemies line up - then let em have it : )
* If you drive too slow... every once in a while the game will send an executioner after you... or... it will send a switchblade at you but he travels a LOT faster than normal!
Have fun ^_^
Btw- Outrun is my alltime fave driving game. Had to put hunter above it tho - as its got more depth and replay value.
-
With my current cab I'd have to go with Shinobi and the Gradius series. But if I had the controls Star wars and Discs of Tron. Theres so many brilliant old school games, out of every thing Mamed so far I could easily pick 20 and enjoy each as much as the next!
-
Robotron: 2084 (but of course ;)
Tempest
-
Mr. Do
BurgerTime
--JamIt
-
Final Fight
Galaga '88
Again, this is just how I feel atm :)
-
Galaga
Moon Patrol
-
Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition
Strider (Liked it so much the first time I played it went home and bought the Genesis version.)
-Ften
-
Robotron (I finally own the "real" thing)
Gyruss and Tempest would probably tie for my second favorite.
Dave
-
Galaga
X-Men-4 Players (just to hear Colossus go RAAAAAHHHHHH!!! and wipe everyone off the screen when you used his super move...cracks me up everytime) :P
-
Joust
Gladiator
-
Shinobi
Gauntlet I or II
-
Pac-man
720
(like most people here, my top games rotate periodically... really need about 10!)
Paige, when did you get a Robotron?? I would take a Robotron if I ever found a chance at a nice one.
Wade
-
I'd put Track & Field and Hypersports as one game, but since I can't think of a single solid second place game (too many to choose from), I'll use those as my 1 & 2.
Darkstalker, I hate your avatar man. You obviously have no kids! You gotta change it.
-
hmm.. i'd have to go with:
mortal kombat 2 (as a permanent)
and
sexy parodius (as a current/rotating)
-
Gyruss
Galaga
Although I'm currently addicted to Bank Panic for some reason.
-
bank panic is cool! but my two 'most played' games on the cab at this time are:
commando
galaga
those have been close for ages. next ones are way down in number of times played (bank panic is #12 at the moment, but working its way up :) )
-
Having grown up through the arcade hayday.......there's too many to list. But nobody mentioned one of my favorites:
Wizard of Wor
Phoenix
-
all time great
galaga
metal slug
-
Black Tiger
Dig Dug
-
Ahhhh, only 2, I have a hard enough time getting it under ten. I can't do just 2
Crazy climber, Donkey kong, Tempest, Asteroids, galaga, Phoenix, centipede, Mr Do, Mario bros, bump n jump
And that's just the tip of the iceburg, I could easily go on to my top 20 especially with discs of tron, robotron, disco 1, joust, frogger
Ahh with all the classics how can you just pick 2 - I'd rather knaw off my leg then have to make that type of decision. ;)
-
Time Pilot (and TP '84, actually owned it)
Mr. Do!
-
If I had to pick only two....
Tempest
Defender
-
only 2?!?
ok then Galaga and Dragons Lair ... and Gauntlet .. oh and Narc ... and Zaxxon ... and *sigh*
-
Cabal
Waku Waku 7
Dare to be different! 8)
-
King of Fighters (Can't pick one of them) :P
Robotron 2084
-
Without question-
R Type
Defender
-Sapper
-
Let's see...
Shinobi (my clear favorite)
and
lets see...
Rampage
There are many other contenders for the number 2 spot (Baseball Stars 2, Empire Strikes Back, DigDug, etc...) but Rampage has the best combination of playability and interesting concept in my opinion... Baseball Stars 2 has better playability, but a poor concept, Whereas ESB has a better concept, but is not as playable.
Oh, and let's not forget Polybius!
-
This is such a good thread....
I was reviewing and playing other people's favs..
Cam across Wizard of Wor (skim36)
Completely forgot about that one. What a classic.
I remember playing that hours on end with my bro.
I'll have to keep trying out the others...
-
Galaga
Cliffhanger
-
magic sword
and
commando
but opinions are like ... uhh nevermind.
-
ghosts and goblins - even though its so damn hard
donkey kong jr.
-
As far as favorites go.... I can't settle on just 2...
but, the two that have the most plays are:
Gyruss (wife's favorite)
Galaga
-
**Robotron
**Stargate
Southpaw
-
Pacman & Donkey Kong. If I had a nickel for every quarter I put in those . . .
-
Donkey Kong - All time favorite
Bust A Move - The game I play most often
-
robotron & metal slug
-
Ms. Pac-man
Mr. Do!
They should just get married - they are perfect!
-
Pac-Man
Arkanoid (Breakout, whatever you wanna call it)
-
Mine
Speed Buggy (Own one)
Mad Planets
Wife's
Ghost n' Goblins
Gyruss
Kid's
Metal Slug - All of 'em
X-Men
-
Arkanoid and Mario Bros.
I use MAMEWAH. It's easy to setup and there are a lot of places that tell one how to get various emulators working. http://home.comcast.net/~cpviewer/downloads.htm helps a lot for the ini files.
-
Street fighter...all of them
88 games
I'm a little surprised at how many games are "Goleden Age" on the thread. I'm 28 and my donky kong/galaga experiences were very short. In a painful way. Especially spy hunter. I used to walk a mile and a half (seemed long at the time) to the arcade with $2. The last thing I could deal with was 18 seconds of spy hunter before my quarter was gone. Am I toward the young end of this hobby.
-
Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting (although original and Champion Edition are my nostalgia games)
Smash TV (I have four joysticks on my CP pretty much only for this game--a brand new toaster, Oh Yeah, give me about a hundred of those, gift wrapped, please ;D)
I second the opinions on the Spy Hunter writeup. I actually figured those techniques out in the arcade on a measly five dollar a week allowance. Luckily, at Silverball, the local arcade, you could get six tokens for a dollar (why didn't I save any of those tokens?) and of course the games only cost a token. I got to where I could play Spy Hunter through the boat stage twice on a single token--on a really good game, of course. The wheel/pedal/shifter setup is beyond my reach right now, unfortunately, or I would go for building a dedicated Spy Hunter something-or-other post-haste.

hmmm thats a tough one!
I'd have to say
1) Forgotten Worlds
2) Black Tiger
But any Capcom game pretty much does it for me :)
-
Wow, only two?
For Arcade I would have to say Moonwalker and Terminator 2, although NFL Blitz and all Golden Tee's are right up there..And for the Genesis, my favorite system of all time, Id have to go with Sonic 1 and 2, and Battletoads ;)
-
Soccer Brawl
Street Fighter 2 Turbo: Hyper Fighting
At least they're the two I find myself playing most!
-
Neo Drift Out Challenge
and either Marble Madness or Marvel vs. Capcom (what? it's a fun game...)
-
Asteroids
Hypersports
Not sure wich way round so put them alphabetical.
Waiting for Hypersports to be delivered so may change in a few days.
Bowza

I'm a little surprised at how many games are "Goleden Age" on the thread.
-
The reason I NEED emulation.
Rygar
Black Tiger
(http://www.jaredkent.com/images/1/rygar)(http://www.jaredkent.com/images/1/blktiger.png)
-
Robotron
Galaga
Nothing else is even close.
I agree, with my favorite being galaga.
I'm using 3DArcade as my front end and it is a little difficult to use but I've got it up and running very well.
-

Monkeybomb,
I personally don't think you're young, being 27 myself, but, yeah, I guess our generation saw just the end of the "Golden Age" in the Arcades, at least in terms of maturity. All those college students could play games like Pac-Man for seemingly forever and I could only reach the third or fourth board on a good play--not to mention that I couldn't afford gauntlet, although I loved it. So, yeah, being pre-teen and broke in an 80s arcade just as the Golden Age ground to a halt surely wasn't the greatest of our gaming experiences. Still, I felt lucky that my local arcade hung on to the classics almost until the nineties. Playing two player Joust still beats the hell out of spinning the joystick and mashing buttons on Street Fighter 1 IMO.
KenToad
*Edit--Running MameWah, very nice frontend
-
- Track & Field
- Galaga
- Gaunlet
-
Wizard of Wor
Gauntlet
One of my best friend in the early 80's had an actual Wizard of Wor in his basement. We used to play on it for hours.
Absolutely nothing beats being 12 or 13 and having a full size, real life arcade machine in your basement.
-
Elevator Action
Such a very simple game, and yet somehow, hypnotic. There's some kinda weird synergy that happens with these old games where the sound and the 'feel' of the game's response to the the controls when you're zoned into it...like buzzing down 6 or 7 floors in the elevator, floaty jump-kick takes out two spies simultaneously (thumpthump!) while you fire in mid air and take out a lamp on the way down (crash!)... then back to the elevator and buzz down 4 more floors...I dunno. Utterly compelling.
Joust
Again with the perfect combination of sound and controller feel. Every pixel, every wing flap, every detail of this game is so well thought out and designed. Everyone who's ever played it knows exactly how it feels to bounce from enemy to enemy, laying waste to all who oppose you... the claustrophobic feeling of knowing that a screenfull of enemies is above you, and you don't feel 'safe' until you're at the top of the screen, in control... With games like that, it doesn't even matter how far you get, how good you are, because just the basic play mechanic is so damn fun.
-
This is hard to do.. and I'm sure I'll change my mind as soon as I hit the Post button
Galaga (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=G&game_id=7881)
Mr. Do's Castle (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=8771)
