Does anybody have a guess as to what percentage of Mame games are CGA...when did they start going to EGA and VGA?
-Dave

A LARGE amount is CGA. (guestimate is 80% - 85%)
Check MAWS and do advance searches by screen size and just count the EGA+higher.
I dont have an exact number myself, but would be curious.

Ok, lets check mame .60 which is the version installed on my laptop.
The vector games aren't CGA, there are 35 of those. There are a similar (smaller) amount of EGA games. Lets say 20. Believe me there aren't may of them, it is probably less than this even. (Too lazy to go count them right now).
There are 1902 unique games in mame .60.
That means that Mame is 97.1 percent CGA as of mame .60
If you take the vector games out of the picture, since they CANNOT be run at the proper resolution regardless on monitor, then that changes it to 99 percent CGA.

That doesn't work. To find CGA games you would check which games have number-of-lines x refreshrate < 15.75KHz but the information in MAME isn't accurate.
E.g. both popeye and tapper are CGA games with ~480 lines but the refreshrate information is 30Hz for one and 60Hz for the other.

I can pretty much list them from memory
The Atari System II games.
APB
Toobin
Steel Talons
Narc
and about 30 unemulated games, and another dozen games that are in mame but require computers that don't exist yet in order to run them.
Klov also lists a lot of games as mid res that aren't mid res.

Let me add to your list:
- all Beatmania games
- all Sega Model 2 games (Virtua Fighter, Star Wars Arcade, etc.)
- all Sega System 24 games (Hot Rod, Scramble Spirits, etc.)

I listed those very clearly. I said "another dozen or so games that require computers that don't exist yet".
Star Wars arcade has got to be res switchable, as everyone I have ever seen had a standard res projection monitor.

Ok...so what happens if one is to try to run an Atari System II game on a CGA monitor?

If you are using an arcadevga it is just scaled down, otherwise it shows a double/triple overlapping image and will eventually blow out the monitor.
