Title: Happ top-fire with an Oscar Restrictor??
Post by: Tommy Boy on September 17, 2002, 04:29:00 pm
Has anyone successfully used one of Oscar's restrictors with a Happ top-fire?  The funky tulip shape makes me think it might not work too well.  Any experiences?

btw, do you already own the joystick...

I've never heard a good thing about them... I don't know if they are the same ones I looked at, but they seemed to be built to go into crain arm machines, not arcade games...  But that one didn't have the range of motion to make the restrictor plates actually touch.

but if the base is the same as any of the happs main 8ways it will work.  The restrictors work with supers (and 360s), competition and ultimates (why did ultimates get that name??).... but if they aren't on the same base... you will be taking a chance

They must have changed the Tulip joysticks because they are virtually the same sticks as the very popular Happ Super.  In fact they are called Top Firebutton Super Joysticks.

For 4-way joysticks, I use the 4-way version of the Tulip (and replace the handles with Super knobs), because reversing the actuator on a normal Super doesn't give you a true 4-way stick.  Quote from Happs:

Same rugged construction and smooth operation as Super Joystick

I'm pretty sure the restrictors would work on the 8-way Tulip (but I can't confirm that).  The main differences between the Tulip and a typical Super are the handle (which has a hollow shaft) and the restrictor plate on the 4-way joystick (which is diamond shaped).  However, I have two complaints about the Tulip sticks:
1)  I don't like the look of the handles
2)  The Z-stops should be larger because they tend to catch on the 4-way restrictor plate; however, you can add a washer disc to eliminate this problem. (http://pccab.net/4way.htm)

PCC, I think we're on the same page -- sort of.  My concern is precisely based upon the fact that the handle IS different between the Tulip and the regular Super.  Oscar designed the restrictor with the regular Supers in mind.  Since the slots in the restrictor plates are only so wide, my concern is that the fatter Tulip handle will bind, stick, or simply not be able to fully make contact.  I'm thinking 4-way, 2-way, and Diagonal.

I guess my question was more geared towards understanding if it works at all, and if so, does it work well or is it a completely crappy solution and therefore not worth worrying about.

I'd be willing to send Oscar a tulip handle so he could test it.  I'm sure I have one lying around somewhere.

Thanks PCC.  That's a very kind offer but I didn't mean to put anyone out.  I just thought perhaps someone had tried it and had had some experiences to report.  I may not even go the tulip route -- still deciding.

Thanks again.

Actually, Kelsey will probably take you up on that offer.

What would be really cool is for Kelsey to develop the "multi-top" joystick solution that is getting kicked around on the other thread.  If that solution included some kind of button-top as an optional configuration then this whole disussion would be moot.

AND -- most importantly -- there'd finally be a good solution to the whole crappy state of current button-sticks.  By most accounts the tulip stinks but there just aren't many good options

FWIW, Lilwolf is talking about the Happ Fire button Compact Joystick http://www.happcontrols.com/joysticks/50700800.htm and TommyBoy is talking about the Happ Top Fire Button Super Joystick http://www.happcontrols.com/joysticks/50800010.htm

Thank you very much for the offer.  I have to put in an order to Happ anyway in the next day, so I'll just go ahead and pick one up for myself to test.  I will also need it for testing of the new joystick shafts I'm looking at, that is if it turns out I will be able to do them.  Thanks again, though, I appreciate it!
