Title: Powering your cabinet
Post by: Craig on October 29, 2004, 07:13:03 pm
How does everyone get power to their cabs? I made a small wall plate with an IEC socket and switch for mine but dumped that idea because it was too ugly. I don't really want to just have a mains cable running from a hole in the cab. Any ideas on what to do?

During the design of my cabinet I was always intending to use a flush mains power socket. Umm.. sorta like this one:

Maybe look at caravan/camper trailer stores?

In the end I just ended up with a mains cable running from a hole in the cab. ;)

Yeah, I'd have to say, no matter how you dress it up, it's going to basically be a cble coming out of a hole in the cab :)

I know my jamma cab has a metal plate that is inset into the wood, and knotted behind the metal plate so it doeesn't get pulled out, but with a home cab,m theres just not much of a point since you probly won't have people beating the crap out of your cab and pulling it around your living room by the cord....

used one of these. forgotten what it was from, a dead monitor or something. i had to make the hole a bit bigger to fit it though but underneath a cocktail it doesnt matter

a view from inside...

there is probably a version that allows this sort of mounting properly. like i say, i took it off something else. just remembered, it was from the monitor IN the cab. nothing like recycling the bits  :D. it was flush mounted to the pcb. you would just need one that is designed to point UP from the pcb.

edit: a dead power supply might have the right shape...

Thanks for the reply. I am impressed by your safe wiring by using heatshrink tubing etc. ;-)

the wires to the right go to some microswitches for the rotating monitor. even with the heatshrink i STILL managed to get zapped a few times adjusting them!!

I have actually started modifiying my real cabinets this way. Whenever I need to replace a cord I do it that way now. Makes it so much easier to deal with.
