Title: Suggestions for a good PC steering wheel
Post by: Hoagie_one on October 27, 2004, 03:34:23 pm
would like to use it for driving games as well as maybe some flying games and what not.

need some suggestions for a good one that is the most versatile.

Also helps if it can be easily bolted down to a metal CP and as easily removed.

I have the Logitech momo steering wheel, I have only played Outrun with it but it's a nice steering wheel.  It attaches to the front of my control panel with 3 screw clamp type things and is easily removed.  I wish mame supported force feedback, but I will be getting some pc racing games to use that feature.

I'm opting for "true arcade" wheels on the driving cab I'm planning.
The "PC" wheels feel really cheap by comparison.

My biggest suggestion is that you find a way to go modular with it, so that you can have a 270 wheel, AND a 360 wheel.
Having only one or the other leaves out alot of games.

I have an old Logitech Wingman Formula Force (the red one) I picked up from Ebay a few years ago that works great. I think that the Momo is the next version of it, but IMO, the FF looks better - having never used a Momo, I don't know how the feel is in comparison.

Yep, I use a thrustmaster 360 modena wheel. The reason I got this one is because it has trottle/brake pot levers below the shift levers. Its excellent for chase hq and newer 270 degree games but pretty useless for 360 optical games. I tried 4 different PC wheels before settling on this one. The switches are handy for S.C.I. and the like.

How could this be done?  Can in be done?  Couldn't you play 270 games with a 360 wheel?

im opting for a 270 wheel and use my spinner for 360 games....not the best choice, but its all i can do for now.

How about mounting options?  DO all pc wheels have desk type clamp downs?

Almost any Logitech wheel is good.

I use an Interact V4 force feedback and it is excellent IF you don't use XP AND you can find a compatible soundcard.
The construction is really rugged and it actually looks like a proper car wheel. Picked mine up on ebay for

My plan is to mount the wheels on removable boards, so that I can swap between them for different games.
Happ makes surface mount wheels that have the optics contained in a box that is designed to bolt to the top of existing "non-racing" games to convert them.

And no, you can't play MOST 270 games with a 360 wheel because of the way they handle the input.
The spring center on the 270 wheels tells the CPU when the wheel is not being turned.
If you use a 360 wheel on 270 games, it sets center to wherever the wheel is when the game initializes.
If you then turn to the left, when you get done you have to turn back to the right to the EXACT place you started from to get the car to go straight again.

There are a few 270 games that are playable with a 360 wheel (ChaseHQ notably), but most of them don't work well at all.
