Title: question about happs trackball behavior

I have the following trackball:

translucent blue with usb/ps2 connections.

I just plugged it in directly to my PC ps2 port (and also tried USB with same results) without hooking up any of the buttons yet..so all I have plugged in is the ps2 connection to the trackball.

XP starts and the trackball can move the cursor directly from left to right (in exactly a straight line).  But if I try to scroll up or down on the trackball instead of the cursor going up and down, it still goes left to right (in that same straight line).  I can push down on the trackball with a little effort and move up and down and the cursor will do what I'm requesting, but if I let up with the pressure and keep moving it, it works correctly for a few seconds then starts only going left/right again.

Is this a problem with the trackball?  Do I need a specific driver for this trackball (just using windows default now).  Any ideas?  Also, what is Happ's return policy...as it's been a couple of weeks since this came in and I'm just now getting to checking it out  :(

sound like your optics might be misalligned.  i would suggest opening up the case, using a multimeter to make sure the optics are getting power and making sure that the boards and the rollers/encoder wheels are seated correctly..

good suggestion to take it apart.  you will see its not too complex in there.  when i got mine it did not roll very smooth.  took it apart, checked that everything moved freely, put it back together and it rolled smooth.

You need to break in your TB.  TheRealBobRoberts (http://therealbobroberts.com/) has lots of info on TBs (one of them, taking about your exact situation (http://www.dameon.net/BBBB/moretb.html)).

Besides the misaligned stuff, the other common cause are your horizontal bearings (X axis) are more worked in than the vertical bearings.  You need need to break in your trackball.

Did I mention all new, not used for a while, and just cleaned rollings/bearings trackballs need to be broken in? ;)
