Title: ALMOST DONE!!! Some pics of my first Maming =)
Post by: tshizzle.com on October 25, 2004, 04:09:06 pm
very excited - just need to add the front door down there when the coin door used to be, the drawer front for the keyboard tray, and get me a piece of smoked plexi for the front.  Opinions?

I assume the speakers that are resting atop the cab will make their way inside?

Looks good so far.  Get the door on and the glass in place and get playing.  If you are like I was, you will soon want for a trackball (and spinner and dedicated 4-way, etc), at which time you'll build your own custom controller.  Until then, enjoy your new toy! :)

well I knew the X-Arcade hating was coming ;)

Seriously, I bought the X-Arcade before I was doing a cabinet.  I bought it just because I started maming on the PC and stumbled accross an ad for it and almost $hit myself.  Then started seeing all the beautiful MAME cabs and had to get to work on one myself.  And if you notice - the X-Arcade fits almost PERFECT in the Nintendo Panel area.  Like Nintendo knew I was gonna slap an x-arcade in there 20 years ago ;)

But yea , after reading alot of other people's projects , building a Control Panel doesnt seem nearly as hard as it did at first.  I probably wont have a personal panel until my next cab (already thinking ahead) since I just am in love with this one so far.

Pics of smoked plexi coming soon!!!

You really cant see the TV at all, but the camera's flash shows it in these pics a bit.  WOW It makes things so much nicer looking compared to without it

Still have your original panel? I can do simple flat panels like that cab easily. I'll do it for a small fee!!

Yeah, you're gonna hear no X-Arcade love here.  :P

Besides that, yeah, when you get the speakers inside and the coin door on it'll look solid.

Then you'll just need to add some personality to it.  8)

hehe I know everyone hates the X-Arcade, but really why?  The sticks are real nice for fighters and beat-em-ups - it could be a little wider for 2 players, but hey it was cheap (ebay) and not hard at ALL

IMHO it is mainly because it looks like it was bolted on as an afterthought, rather than being an integral part of the cab.

That said, I think your cab looks fine - at least the colors are consistient so the effect is minimized.

Sounds like the X-arcade led you down the path to building a cabinet.  Nothing wrong with that.  Play on it until you decide exactly what custom controller design you want to build.  The tweaking of the layout may take quite a while and you'll have a controller in the meantime.  I've been in your shoes and, while the X-arcade is a nice product, there is no comparison to one you build yourself! :)

hehe I know everyone hates the X-Arcade, but really why?

#1. because this board is called "Build Your OWN Arcade Controls"

#2. X-arcade is fine if you want a controller to use on a coffee table or desk, but once you cross the line and bother getting an arcade cabinet, it's time to ditch the "toy". You're playing with the big boys now.  ;D

Why is it still out in the garage?

Did you black-out the silver of the TV at all or is the smoked plexi just that good?

I blacked out the TV with thick black electrical tape.  With that and the smoked plexi you cant see it at all.

One day that x-arcade will be outta there ;)
