Well, finally go underway today. Started on the control panel first so it would keep me motivated to finish the cabinet ( panel sitting there saying play me should keep me going ). Stripped and sanded the panel down to bare metal and coated with some Rustoleum. Bearings, rollers, CPO will be in tomorrow and those will be put on . Kid brother is really into helping me...well 18, not such a kid anymore so it's kind of a joint project which is pretty cool. Now a little help from someone if you can. I need a cone for one of my switches ( all switches work good, but one has a crack in it ), if someone could help out there, I'd appreciated it....I know Charlie at Gamecab.com is supposed to be repro'ing these, but I don't see them available as of yet. I will keep you guys posted on the progress. You can check out my site if you want even though there isn't a whole lot to be seen yet except before pics. Just click photo album on the left link to view

Vader,
I am also trying to restore the same type of missile command cabinet as well. Unlike your working cabinet, mine was totally gutted but the cabinet itself is in great shape. If you need measurments feel free to contact me. I also plan to post the pics of my restoration on the Gamecab site.
Also - If you want to part with the parts, just give a yell ;D
Thanks
Charlie

I just noticed that that huge maxi trackball is held in by 3 carriage bolts. I'm surprised. Maybe I just can't see the 4th one. That thing just feels soooo heavy. I gotta get one of those.

Sweet. It does my heart good to see this classic being restored to it's former glory!
-
Wow Vader, you sure jumped into this one with botth feet running. I'm impressed you even got parts shipped to you so fast. Seems like only a few days ago you found this machine.

It's not worth doing things half assed...lol. It really got my blood pumping after I went to countless pages and seen what people were able to accomplish when they took there time.....I just seeing how nice the panel turned out made me that much more happy.....I've had the machine a week today I believe, will hopefully be picking up the wood this week and getting into the dirty stuff, get that finished, install new lock, sideart, molding....and she is good as new......even gonna save the original serial number sticker on the back and put it on the new one....call me nostalgic

Awesome. I don't know why but I feel like giving you an award like they do at the Oscars. ;)
I am very glad folks take the time to do this! If only I had the space I would be restoring old games also.

Or we could call it fraud. Depends how you look at it. ;-)

Got most of the cab painted today with the exception of one side......right...was nice and perfect till I got a dab of black paint on it...grrr...no big deal......wiped it off and will recoat it later.....well, helpful little nephew decides to fix it while I'm at store......WITH A BRUSH !!!!...ack...now have to sand it down and repaint that area...thank god not ver big.....the white edges will get tmolding...so don't let that at throw ya off.......Missile Command....yah ha

when you repaint it, I'd highly recommend painting those white edges. I know you say they'll get T-molding, but if you're the least bit off, those white bits will stick out like a sore thumb and you'll think it looks like @$$. Do yourself a favor and paint them anyway, that way, if the T-molding separates even slightly, it'll still look sharp and clean.
Oh, and whack your nephew on the nose with a rolled up newspaper and tell him "NO!"....then rub his nose in it. That oughta learn 'im. ;D
-
Funny that you mention that....before I came back and read your reply....I stuck some moldinging in there and shure enuff I was off by like a /32 and it looked bad...Live and
learn......I'm sure it's been done numerous times...glad I caught it before banging molding in...

Looks great so far vader, well both have some wargame action going soon.
I just won this on EBAY im very happy about it because that latex paint will never know what hit it and i know that there is some immaculate sideart under there.
Link to what i just won =) (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=6124183258&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT)
I found your thread because I did a search on Missile Command to see what info i could get on the original trackballs optics and if they could be adapted to use aftermarket optic boards our if an optipac would do the trick. Im sure the answer is sitting there on my search results page but your thread was the first that popped up and i had to check it out. Did you get your CPO from Arcadeshop? It looks very nice!
Good luck on the cabinet!
-
well the price was certianly right!
good catch
-
Sain.....I did get the CPO from Arcade Shop....excellent quality, I also picked up the rollers and bearings from them.....first rate company...

Accomplished quite a bit today, got the whole cabinet wired back up and did it right the first time......thank god for digital cameras. Still need to purchase artwork, cardboard bezel and get some black sercurity screws for the marquee. I'm on the left, my little brother on the right.....t'molding on order and new cones from gamecab too....

Insane. A great job.
-
Great work man, looks great.
Thanks for bringing up gamecab, i checked the site out and its giving me some more option on getting cones for the control panel. I would like to get the fire base buttons all black and low profile, for the player start buttons im going with any atari led volcano buttons and cones i can get for a good price. Im still researching what i should do for a bezel, i cant find any good pics of what an actual bezel for this game looks like but this pic makes me think I could get by on a handcrafted bezel out of black construction paper.
-
It's just a simple cardboard bezel....gonna go to a craft shop and attempt it with some thick posterboard.....and btw....you cab lookg great.....

This particular missile command was an example from a seller on EBAY that totally restored his, I wish it was mine. I used it since you can pretty much see the design and shape of the bezel.
Yeah im going to keep my eye open for a bezel on ebay until im almost done with this project and then ill take a crack making the bezel if one doesnt turn up.
