Title: Motherboard help.
Post by: JesterDEV on September 14, 2002, 08:15:59 pm
Sorry if this is off topic but its related to my cab. ???

I need to find a cheap motherboard that has integrated video, and audio and that supports a 900mhz athlon t-bird cpu(The one that looks like a nintendo cart)..

So far I've looked all over the net. Even a cheap mb cpu combo would be nice. I'm about over my bugdet for the month so I need something cheap.. Just for now.

Really just integrated audio.. But video would save me from using my geforce4...

I don't know where you can find a cheap motherboard.
But if I were you I would splurge and get a $30 sound blaster . The 5 or 6 systems that I've tried to use the integrated Audio on had very poor performance.
Cheap on board audio pushes the audio processing onto the cpu and you may end up getting poor frame rates even on simple games. You can get a sound blaster 16 pci for about $15 or a SBlive for around $30 at microx-press.com
They also sell MOBO's, I use an Intel board and I'm not real familliar with boards for AMD chips.

Is it socket A or Slot A?  Either way, a good place for motherboards is http://www.newegg.com
I've dealt with them before, and they are great.  I got my motherboard from them for my MAME cabinet for $39.  It was a refurb, but it works great.  Just no manual.

Thanks for the info, newegg has some good deals that I'm lookin into. I'll probly just buy another cpu, as I'm not even sure if its the motherboard that's fried or the cpu...

On more thing while on the subject. When I mount the mb into the cab would I be ok to just mount it against the wood of the cab, or should I buy a small peice of plexi glass? I board that was in it was just mounted against the wood so I dont think there's going to be a problem, but I just
want to be safe.

Personally, I'd put it on standoffs instead of mounting it flat against any surface...  If nothing else to get better airflow around the motherboard...

Standoffs or plastic washers will also protect your MB from being broken.   The soldered pins of the components protrude on the bottom of the MB and it should not be tightened down on these pins or you can crack a trace inside the MB (many have 3 or 4 layers).  Some standoffs or washers prevent you from putting pressure on these pins.  Also helps with air circulation as noted by Warborg.
