Title: Does your wife/girlfriend play videogames?
Post by: Sephroth57 on October 20, 2004, 04:47:49 pm
Im trying to convert my g/f into a gamer, the only thing she really plays on her own is the SNES mario games. Weve been goin out for like 3 1/2 years, and I always tell her when we get married and get a place were gonna have 2 computers so we can play MMORPGs together. and shes just like ok sure honey. I told her its a requirement im going to put into my vows lol. So im trying to get her started now on gaming a little, whats some good stuff to get her playing? Probably co-op games would be best that arent too complicated to get her started. We used to play Mario Party a lot on GC, have 4 & 5. And she started getting pretty good at the mini-games, but those games got boring after a while , too much wating in between turns.

Summary: does your wife/girlfriend play, what games if so, and what games are good starters

its called a "prenuptual agreement" ;)
ive been trying to get my wife into gaming for years and she enjoys it somewhat now.  she likes the 3d platformers that arent too complicated or frustrating.  she cant handle anything that requires a whole lot of action or dying a lot.  we mostly play on the ps2 so i can recommend some stuff there..

Adventures of Cookies and Cream -- old budget title, simple platformer/puzzle coop and a whole lotta fun

Shrek 2 -- also coop and cutesy.  somewhat childish and got repetitive after a while..

Metal Slug X -- as long as she gets infinite continues she can deal with it.. ;)

unfortunately, theres not a WHOLE lot of coop games that are easy to pick up, and thus wife friendly, so thats why i got her into platformers like Sly Cooper, Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, ICO, etc.

ive got a GC too and have Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles and 2 GBAs but havent gotten the chance to get into that yet..

as for MMORPGs, the problem is finding a good one for the casual gamer and having to pay double for 2 accounts.  it really sucks ass when you get 10 lvls ahead of your wife and suddenly can't group anymore..  the only one that really piques my interest is Guild Wars, (NO monthly fee!!!) which should be out soon.  you could always try a free / open beta one but i havent found any that grabbed me like AC/EQOA/FFXI did..

My girlfriend loves to game... something I didn't even really know when we first started going out, but I learned very early on.

And she's not a "girl that likes games" either.... she's a gamer.  She will hand you some serious competition in most fighting games, loves platformers and action games, etc.  She also loves puzzle games, as most gals seem to.  She's actually excited about me getting my machine up and running sometime this century, so hopefully that means I'll have the green light for many more machines if we wind up together for good.

I just finished helping her set up her new gaming computer, we finished up her custom modded xbox a few weeks back.... I really am a lucky jerk, heh.

As you can see, I didn't really need "starter" games for my gf, but I've found puzzle games always attract women, as well as party games like you mentioned.  Anything that gets a group involved is great, or is simple yet compelling for two people to play.  Uo Poko caught my girl's eye immediately, Mario Party, Ms. Pac, stuff like that.

Good luck converting her ;)

I've been losing the "getting my girlfriend to game" battle for 5 years now.  While I have had some successes, it's a losing war I think.  Things that have worked for me:

Adventures of Cookies & Cream (PS2)
Animal Crossing (GC) - BIGtime
Hello Kitty Cube Frenzy (PS1)
Um Jamma Lammy (PS1)

I just got Katamari Damarcy (PS2) for this sole purpose, and I hope to get her playing that by Halloween.  She likes "cute" games.

I also would LOVE to have her play a MMORPG with me, or even some other co-op games like FF:CC or Zelda: Four Swords.  5 years later and still no success.

She has never even touched my arcade cabinet once - even when some of her friends were playing!  And I've had that up and running for 2 years now!

See, the problem is that she "tricked" me into thinking she was interested in games before we started dating.  She bought a PS1, and had Soul Blade and Tomb Raider 2 and she 'said' that she was playing sometimes when I called her.  Now I don't believe she ever played them.  That's false advertising and grounds for breakup correct?

Point - how about a trade?

i got katamari damacy as well.  i have enjoyed it, but i dont think she has gotten past the learning curve as well as i would have hoped.  the game is not very lenient with slow rollers..  :-\
but i have unlocked the 3 eternals and hopefully, she can get a bit more out of it..

My girlfriend (we've been going out almost 2 years now) has actually helped me on some aspects of getting my machine together.  We haven't played a ton of games together but she really likes the driving (ala Crusin' USA) and shooter (Area 51/Maximum Force-style) games.  Though, she also seems to like puzzle like games.

My wife really likes Puzzle Bobble, too.  She also likes any of the Bomber Man games, and one we both like is Poy-Poy (Ps1 game).  Anything where 4 players can play at once is usually pretty good when her friends come over.

My wife really LOVES the Dance Dance Revolution games (got 2 versions for the PS2 with dancepads).
I'm planning to get/build a metal dancepad for my cab and run Stepmania on it to lure her a bit closer to the dark side...

Next to that she likes Pikmin on the gamecube.

My wife is on the fence.  She loves Bust-a-move and any solitaire computer game.  She plays The Incredible Machine and loses hours on Yahoo! games (especially Text Twist) but as for console/mame games she could care less.  She likes to watch though which is good - especially GTA or any other story/mission based game...  weird.

The only games my wife plays is The Sims 2 and Slot Machine games.  She rarely plays on the Mame machine.  But she understands my gaming needs.  As I play Madden 2005 online or Socom 2 online almost every night with buddies.

My girlfriend likes to play the Mario Party series of games, and Monopoly Party as well.  She's even interested in playing World of Warcraft which had me floored!  I even ordered a new video card and some extra RAM for her system so she could actually run the game.  She's definately not a gamer though, but she's learning and I'm proud of her progress to geekdom.

I keep trying to tell her that videogames are a lot more fun than just watching TV, but she still insists on watching General Hospital  ::)

I wish she played games.  If it's not one of those little MSN flash type games, she won't touch it.  Luckily, she understands my needs though.  I buy games and car stuff, she buys clothes and holiday decorations.  So far, her stuff takes up more room than mine...

Heh, I'm not too sure about that one... I mean.... you'd have to add something in to even out the trade no??

I mean... no way... um... I wouldn't even consider it... ever...... I love you baby ;)

Also, how could I forget DDR.... we both love to play DDR, and she is damn good at it, although I think I got her beat.  Funny part is I can't dance worth a damn, but I beat her at DDR, when she dances like crazy in "real life"

Ever since the last New England BYOAC meetup, Jen has been addicted to Burger Time. On the first meetup (during the championship), she spent most of the day playing Tetris, then got really pissed off when some world record holder knocked her off the highscore table.

She also loves Samba De Amiga, I bought the Dreamcast maraca controllers just so she'd have an excuse to play video games with her friends when we're all drunk  ;D

I'll second Samba De Amigo.   Add some huge Sombrero's I brought back from Mexico, to make it even funnier, and the chicks just won't leave my parties!

I'm lucky my GF is into games too...although not as competitive as me, she still can get pertty hooked on puzzle games and some RPGs.

Argh, had a really detailed reply typed up and it disappeared. Short version:
* = Games we played together (as opposed to taking turns)
All the mario games from NES to N64, all Zelda games from NES to Gamecube, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time (but not the longer fight scenes), Black & White, Singles, Mario Kart* for NES, N64, and Gamecube (in reverse order of preference), Marathon* 2 and Infinity, Unreal Tournament*, Quake 3*, Serious Sam* 1 & 2, Battlefield* 1942 and Desert Combat, Road Rash* 64, Gish, DDR, Tetris, Dr. Mario, misc flash/shockwave games, ALL the Harry Potter games, Simpsons Hit and Run, and GTA 3 and VC.

Things she looks for in a game, her words: Story driven (even if ridiculous), puzzles, relatively low-stress low-punishment games (not starting allll the way over after a death etc.).

...I married her a month ago :)

She did say I could have as many arcades as I want as long as I make her a pacman cocktail though :).

My wife plays games now and then mainly Snow Bros on my cab which is about the only thing she will try on the cab.  She enjoys playing the Sims on the xbox and just get engrossed in that for long periods.  Has played Timesplitters 2 (xbox) when we've had friends over.  Is quite good at the different flavours of Tekken (PS1) which I think is down to button mashing

The Girlfriend loves Shinobi, she used to play it when she was younger and couldn't remember the name. Major brownie points for having it on the cab I was trying to convince her it was a good idea to put in the dining room. Unfortunately the novelty wore off once I started cutting MDF for a new cab and turned the kitchen into a workshop!

As girl in her teens, my girlfriend used to play pacman ALL the time at the pizza shop nearby. She even claims that there's a pattern in the game where you can't get killed (some dude taught her the pattern) and says even a few times she did the whole maze with her eyes CLOSED! she said she could listen to the sounds while playing. I don't believe her....i let her play pacman on the cpu but she said she can't do it because of the keyboard controls.

I haven't yet started on my cabnet but will this month and purchased Microsoft Return Of Arcade, so i somewhat have the rights to own pacman on the cabnet. Only then will she be able to prove herself with some joysticks...

Does anyone know if there really is a "pattern" to follow for the whole pacman game without getting killed?

Happiness is coming home and finding the fiancee playing Gradius 2 on your MAME cab.

She plays shooters, MMOs, survival horror, came into our relationship with a SNES, Colecovision and some nice PSX games.

She (thanks to me  ;) ) is known among her peers as the person who knows everything about games.

She did have a odd DDR habit, but it seems she's pretty much kicked that.  ;D

She's a gamer.  We's happy.  :)

Wife says, why did you waste your money on that crap. I start playing it, she says can I try, I then let her try and she wants to play it for an hour and a half.

Wow, funny how a lot of women don't like gaming or only play puzzle or Sim games.  Yuck.

I love playing games.  Bought Doom3 when it came out, playing Neverwinter nights now, devoted PC gamer you could say.  Castle Wolfenstein was cool.  I love blowing stuff up.  I'm into RPG's the heaviest though.  Had fun playing Quake II on a network I set up with my other and we would play for hours.  Problem is, I lost like %95 of the time, but I never gave up and once in a while I would whoop some arse and make my other madder than heck.
I'm almost finished with my Mame arcade cab, just need to throw together a new PC to put in it cuz my old one won't work with the darn arcade VGA card.  I LOVE RETRO GAMING!!!  Put the whole thing together myself (the controls and all)

And I'm a woman.

Cheers!  ;D

My g/f is pretty big into games. Lemme list the games she's finished..

-Prince of Persia : The Sands of Time (Finished both Ps2 and Xbox versions 3 times each)
-Zelda: Ocarina of Time
-Zelda : Windwaker
-Got all the extras and all the characters in Soul Calibur (DC)
-Mario64 (All 120 stars)
-Tons more, i just cant think of em off the top of my head

Im blessed with having a very very attractive g/f and she games  ;D. If you all want some arcade games to play together, play a coop game like Metal Slug 2, X-men, Simpsons, etc. Also pop in Puzzle Bobble or Super Puzzle Fighter 2. I dont know any girl gamers that play any hardcore fighting games like Marvel VS Capcom or DarkStalkers. I think the learning curve is too high...no offense to any girls out there.

Some of this I think I've mentioned in other threads, but I'll mention what I can remember here...

My wife never played much before we got married, altho she came into the marriage with 3 NES consoles each with ONLY Super Mario Bros. (lol)
Once she got the hang of the PS1, she played the Namco Classics, Activision Classics and a few other "arcadish" games....

Then, when I got the PS2, I tried buying games we both would play... (the Burnout series, Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank)...

THEN.... I built the MAME... she really got into Galaxian, Galaga (and their many variations)... and then I got Gyruss up and running... and it's been tough getting the MAME back from her... she's got the top score ( currently at 355,200... I think) and isn't looking back....

She's also into Final Fantasy (having beaten FF7, FFX and has a save in FF6)...

Not to mention stuff I've downloaded like Hamsterball, Bejeweled, Dynomite and the downloadables from http://www.kewlbox.com
