Hello, I have been trying to set up a NES emulator on the computer I'm going to put in my cab. I can't seem to get them to work. I have the emulators setup and working on my other computer which has xp, but this computer has win98se. I have tried both FCEU and VirtuaNES, since I am using mamewah. I have problems with both:
FCEU - When I open it brings a pop up that says "DirecDraw - current bit depth not supported" Other than that it seems to play the games correctly
VirtuaNES - The graphics seem to be really messed up- things that arent supposed to be there are there and then things disappear whenever I walk past them in a game. i think whoever wrote the program doesn't speak english very well so the readme isn't much help to me.
If you know of another emulator that would work with mamewah in win98se that would be helpful. and if you know what my problems are with these it would be helpful as well
thanks

maybe try upgrading DirectX? What version are you running?
I am running FCEU using Mamewah and having no problems, but I'm using XP.

I just updated directx to 9.0c. Could that be a problem? I think it is the newest, not sure though. Should I try an older version?

Like Stormy151, I'm running FCE Ultra on XP with no problems, but the box I'm building had 98SE prior to the upgrade. Both times, DX 9.0c was installed.
Have you tried changing the bit depth in Display properties? Which version of FCE ultra are you running?

Sorry it's taken so long to reply. I've tried changing the bit depth. I am running version 0.97 from screenshotarchive.com.

Hmmm...three things I would try:
1) Delete the fceu.cfg file in the FCE Ultra directory and restart FCE Ultra. The emulator will re-create it.
2) Try upgrading your video card's drivers. If you upgraded from DirectX 8 or earlier, then your drivers are confuzzled with DX9.
3) Try rolling back to a previous DirectX version. If you cannot find one, try DirectX Eradicator. I think you'll find it in http://www.guru3d.com
Options 2 & 3 are more likely to work, but give option 1 a try. It won't kill anything, and requires less work than wiping DX9.
Hope this helps.

FCEU - When I open it brings a pop up that says "DirecDraw - current bit depth not supported" Other than that it seems to play the games correctly
I know this is an old thread, but no one posted a solution - I just tried FCEU last night and got it working (98SE, DirectX 9.0c), but initially had the same problem. Here's the fix:
FCEU "out-of-the box" is set up for full screen settings of 320x240x16 bpp. My graphics card can't handle this (FIC A9200 128M) and I would expect older cards to have more problems. This worked for me.
In Windows Explorer, double-click FCEU.exe - This opens FCEU in a window. Go to the config-video menu. Under full screen, leave Custom selected but change the custom settings to 640x480x16, or 800x600x8, or whatever works (if not sure, just try the likely ones until FCEU doesn't give an error). Also click "Stretch to Full Screen".
This should fix the problems.
